Cook: We Should Have Been Given More Time at Town
Wednesday, 5th Jan 2022 12:13

Former Town boss Paul Cook insists he and his staff should have been given longer at Portman Road in his first public comments since his sacking a month ago yesterday, and says working with the performance department brought in by the club over the summer led to “challenges”.

Cook, 54, was relieved of his duties following the 0-0 FA Cup second-round draw with Barrow having only been appointed at the start of March.

Overall, the former Chesterfield, Portsmouth and Wigan boss was in charge of Town for 44 matches, winning 13, drawing 17 and losing 14.

Asked whether he should have been given longer to turn the Blues around even in light of those figures Cook told Sky Sports News: “One hundred per cent we should have been given longer time. One hundred per cent. I get stats, I get all the stats in the modern-day game.

“I think it’s grossly unfair when you can put a manager’s stats on the table when in the summer we released 27 to 30 players and we brought in 19 new ones. So we’re actually probably talking about two different teams.

“The stats can stand up. We initially went six games I think it was without winning, so that would have brought a pressure.

“We brought a lot of new lads in and a lot of good players, some really good players, a very strong squad. No pre-season into them, signing players very late and then, more importantly, taking their time to integrate into a system, a shape and all the above.

“After an initial period of not winning in six, the next 14 league games yielded seven wins, three draws and four defeats.

“We were sacked after 20 league games and for anyone to tell a manager that 20 league games is enough, in my world, you’re wrong.

“The last six home league games with me and my staff in charge at the club, we won four, drew one and lost to Rotherham.

“So you can always look back. I’m so disappointed because it’s a fantastic club, the fanbase, the training ground, the town itself, absolutely magnificent, they deserve success.

“The supporters down there are fantastic. Were me and my staff given enough time? No, not in my opinion, but that’s Mark Ashton and the owners’ decision, and you have to respect that.”

He says he wouldn’t have stuck around had he known that he wasn’t going to be given the time he anticipated: “If the new ownership had told me if it’s not instant success you’d be gone, I wouldn’t have stayed.

“That’s my only regret, I brought new staff in - Franny Jeffers, Gary Roberts, Ian Craney and John Keeley - who were very committed to a project.

“I managed Portsmouth for two years and it wasn’t all swimming and sailing. The first year we just managed to get to the play-offs, the second year we won the league. I thought that was good progress.

“Certainly for myself and the lads who went in, working with a new performance department brought in by Mark Ashton and not by me, the challenges we had within that daily over training and fitness etc.

“My only regret as a senior manager I stayed after the summer. I should’ve been stronger and forceful with my decisions around it.”

In the summer, the Blues added Andy Rolls as director of performance, Jon Ashton as first-team fitness coach and Andy Costin as head of sports science.

Let's look at just the Cheltenham game where the team weren't drilled for long throws in training because Cook believed all opposition teams should be worried about us not the other way round. He then sends on Louis Barrie in the 86th minute and Tom Carrol in the 89th. I stood there doubting we were losing and thought we must be winning or why else is he running the clock down.

Cook is still failing to take responsibility for the utterly embarrassing and disastrous back-end of last season. We were 7th and 1pt outside the play-offs. So what if they weren't his players? Good managers make the best of what they have and Cook completely failed in this department. This season there was nowhere near enough progress being made and he was justly shown the door. Paul Cook: nice guy, poor manager for ITFC.

People on here expecting instant results with nineteen new players are in cloud cuckoo land. Having said that after nine months Cook wasn't showing any signs of getting the team to play as a solid unit. McKenna comes in and after only ten days the players looked like they were playing to a plan and seemed to know what there roles were . After going one up against one of the better teams apart from one chance we rarely looked like surrendering the lead . Saturday's game against a very awkward physical Gillingham team who seem to give us problems will be a test.

I agree I think he maybe should have been given a couple of months more BUT shifting out the amount of players that he did was unwarranted in my opinion though some definitely needed to go. This doesn't give you a get out of jail free card to extend your time as manager however poor your record is and tactically in that time he wasn't that brilliant.

If you sign 19 new players the most of which came from clubs with very good coaches then surround them by clueless inexperienced ones then you are heading for trouble as the performances proved the players looked lost and bewildered at what they were supposed to be doing and with no tactical nous from the touch line for 90 minutes then we were heading in the wrong direction,
The players had no respect for the so called coaches or the manager(who without Richardson) was clearly out of his depth and his comments about difficulties with the performance dept summed it up you and your so called coaches produced nothing, you state you needed more time(how much? perhaps until you took us to the national league) Nice man is Mr Cook but sadly found out when when operating on his own(sadly for us)

Results mean everything. The way the team played away to Sunderland showed where PC was. Created a new and entertaining side, but defending was bad. No assistant was key to his downfall. The coaches were inexperienced. PC was annoyed that Richardson remained at Wigan and was doing statistically better than him. The demolition was too severe. Wilson and Bishop should have been kept. But hindsight is a virtue. With exit out of L1 a must PC was too naive to think he should have been given more time. The writing was on the wall. The owners did the right thing.

Sorry pc took didn't fit bill. You basically had a season and achieved nothing. Xxx interviews, didn't listen to us to change to two up front just like lambert! You was never gonna go to far as us fans know what we want and you was never gonna deliver. Mr who! We was on fringe of play offs, how far did we get! Mr demolition man my xxxx Yeah ya did! Got ya pay out now wipe ya tears and see ya

Whilst I liked Paul Cook and it probably is a fair comment that he should have been given more time we are now owned by an American Group and they get that the public will not keep rocking up paying to see failure. The results and performances leading up to the dismissal were woeful and suggested that we had perhaps hit reverse gear. These guys have to explain to the pension fund how well their investments are doing, so with this level of investment there is accountability.

PC knows only how to steer a 4-2-3-1 ship and having had the opportunity to pick and recruit the best at this level to play that formation then it's difficult to explain to the owners why things are not going considerably better. This in my view exposed his limitations as a coach and possibly his ability to develop players for the future. Player development and selling on is a big part of the new model.

The decision rightly or wrongly I believe will have partly been hinged on or accelerated by the POPR campaign and the need to be within touching distance of the top six. The later of which is not an unreasonable expectation from the owners given the level of investment and support PC had.

As soon as the results went south and we had encouraged extraordinary ticket sales over the Xmas period, then from a business perspective we were facing a situation that could have set the club back another season or two. The fans consistently delivered but the Charlton game showed the ownership that the fans were on the verge of turning and fear for being taken for granted. Most decent fans will stick with it if they can see some continuing progress, some decent performances and consistency but also players who are obsessed in playing for the shirt with blood, sweat and tears.

I will be careful what I say about Mark Ashton because I do think he is the right guy for us at this juncture in time and hopefully for a much much longer term. However, before he joined I had already picked up on the fact that he had interviewed Paul Cook for the Bristol City job and dismissed appointing him as not the right fit for the culture.

Ashton will tell us all he doesn't want to interfere with the manager's role but I think he does want to seriously have more control of all the aspects of the club rather than an old school set-up. He is clever enough to play the hands off and being a good delegater card and talk the rhetoric of leaving the manage to manage but all along the club structure is being built to accommodate a “head coach” type role albeit under the title of Manager. Ashton I think aspires to doing a considerable part of a “Sporting Director” role under his guise of CEO, so probably was always considering taking a younger guy on to be able to complement his lack of general management experience, and fuel a desire to be more involved in creating a science for running a football club rather than just focussing on the business aspect. The introduction of the current Brentford style model upset Mark Warburton who walked just after he had won promotion for Brentford, he felt it too restrictive and others interfering too much in the managers role.

I suspect all along MA knew he would need to move PC on to get a bitter fit with his vision, the circumstances gave him a much earlier opportunity to do this, otherwise if PC had been ripping it up he would probably have had a two year window to prove how far he could take Town.

However, on the fitness front the team brought in from Bristol City took a lot of stick from brizzle fans about not being able to keep players injury free, maybe what they really meant is over cautiousness and preventing players playing in fear of longer term injuries.

Rightly sacked in my opinion. No point moaning about the overhaul. He was the demolition man. His decision. When you have new owners who invested at that sort of level in league one, they rightly expected better than Cook and his inexperienced coaching team could deliver. It was time for a change. Cook was afterall, Evans choice.

My world wasn't set alight by the appointment of Paul Cook in March. I really wasn't feeling it... he didn't seem like the right fit for me but given that he was put in charge to take us forward, he had my support, as I wanted both him and our club to be successful.

I honestly thought there must be better candidates out there who could have done a better job and I did feel a bit for Paul Lambert, who was given no money or any real support by Evans (crossing myself just for mentioning his name) and dumped unceremoniously when Evans got a sniff of American money.

It was obvious to me that any wholesale rebuild of the squad would take time to come to maturity... time that was never going to be given, it seems.

Football today is one cutthroat business and clubs don't rest for long on their laurels if success isn't almost instantaneous.

Ipswich were always a club who afforded their managers time to put their stamp on a team and allowed them a little bit of leeway if initial results were less than ideal... which they were.

However, I think the writing was on the wall for PC from the off. To state that he was the new owners first choice as manager may have been a little bit of smoke and mirrors and a slight deviation from the truth.

The appointment of Kieran McKenna might just turn out to be a shrewd bit of business if early signs are anything to go by. I know he's only one game in but the players seem to be getting to know each other better now and a young, hungry manager with a sound background and some new ideas might just be the answer to our prayers after languishing for so long in the doldrums.

My only worry is that if he proves to be very successful here, a club higher up the leagues might just swoop in and ruin it for us in the not too distant future.

If all goes well, as we all hope it does, can we tie him down with a watertight contract to protect ourselves and our club's future prosperity?

Long term success and stability should be our goal going forwards.

Ashton and the Gamechager team clearly wanted a modern Manager. They gave Cook a bit of a chance, but when it wasnt working, they ditched him for the sort of man they always wanted. I suspect things will change now.

Ashton is the man with his finger on the pulse of the club, and is answerable to the owners who have piled a shed load of money
into our club, while he states that he will let the manager manage is a fair comment to make but when he is put on the spot from the owners as to what is going wrong then he would have to admit that the manager(on his own) and clueless coaching staff he brought to the club are the reason hence goodbye to all,
therefore we have a new up and coming manager.

Paul Cook was seemingly on a hiding to nothing. His appointment unless I'm wrong was not made by the new regime. Equally Paul would probably not have been aware of how he would be expected to operate. There is a much stronger hand on the ownership rudder these days.
It looks to the outside World judging by the various pieces of information made public that the appointments of some of Paul's support team was not totally down to his decision if at all. This was only ever going to end one way.
Our new manager however will be well versed on how the club will now be running. He must be fine with that which bodes well.
As for Paul I think he should have been given longer considering he didn't finish a full year with us. That said we were labouring somewhat.
Paul does deserve credit for bringing some much needed entertainment back to Portman Road. Results not great but it was largely far more enjoyable than what we have been served up over the past Five or Six years.
Best of luck Paul on your next appointment wherever that may be.

Southampton FC has just been sold. According to the Financial Times, “The transaction gives the club an enterprise value of £200m - £250m including debt ….” That club has a ground capacity of 32,384.

Gamechanger bought Ipswich for a tiny fraction of that, despite the fact that we have a similar ground capacity. The difference, of course, is that Southampton are in the Premier League and we are in League One.

Therefore, if they can get us up then they stand to make a huge sum of money. They will be ruthless in pursuing that objective and they won't let Paul Cook or anyone else mess it up.

Sorry Cookie, dear chap, the games against Rotherham where we were boys against men showed your shortfall….compounded by listening to you and your coaches absolute drivel you shouted out during the Arsenal pizza cup game…when they scored you appeared clueless how to react and it went badly badly downhill. Those two games for me are a microcosm of why you had to go. And that's before the awful Barrow away game. And please you do all a disservice by not referring to last season. You carry the can for that and how you chose to execute your plan. Your plan!! At least have the “huevos” to own that!.. I wanted you to succeed but it was too apparent that it wasn't working…bringing Piggott on in the 87th minute and replacing Bonne when we are chasing a game???!! However I wish you well because of your intent as opposed to your execution of the plan…I have enjoyed watching this season for the highs but we have to get out of this league and you blew it …sorry, the weight of expectation is significant and whether you accept it or not, that was Crystal from the Start Line

Deluded fellow. I don't buy into this 'nice guy' image at all either, he failed to treat many of the original players with any respect.

As for not enough time, let me just say 'fallacy of sunk costs'. Wasn't a moment too soon.

Undoubtedly a nice guy but too chummy with the players the opposite to Keane who was the other extreme. Comedian and lost the respect of the players in my opinion and added to this obstinate and with tunnel vision. Our new manager has the right balance and I am for the first time in years excited and wish him all the very best. First match a tight ship which is something PC just never accomplished. He had the time, money and a brilliant ground and fans to support him. He threw out too many and bought in too many which was a recipe for failure. I wish him good luck but I waved him off in relief because we were not going anywhere different with him at the helm.

Maybe right but the club and owners dont want to wait and see! We the club wanted to hit the ground running! It is not just 20 games but many days and weeks of training!
Unfortunately the club needed to move on

His record speaks for itself.

Would love to have seen him given more time and be a success for us.

Thanks for bringing us a talented new squad and bringing an attacking playing style back to the club.

Best of luck Cooky

Of course he didn't have enough time, nobody ever does these days. How many fans can truly, honestly, hand on heart say they didn't like what PC did with the squad he inherited? A clean sweep with a new Broom is what was being called for and he delivered that. It was exciting. A new dawn. A new brand of football that was nothing if not exciting and entertaining. Everyone in the club said it would take time. Every pundit said it would take time. We had glimpses of what might have become the norm given time. But now,a new messiah? Maybe....we certainly hope so. Yet who knew? How many called for him? What did ANY of us honestly know about him...heard of him even? Lots of talk about how well coached and well drilled they look after just 2 games. A result of what has been witnessed? I'd suggest more a consequence of what we've all read about him.

I'm sad to say that this is the modern game, I don't know why people go in for management it's mostly a no win situation. It was a huge rebuilding job, so in that respect I don't think Cook was given enough time, but the way of the world seems to be throw the baby out with the bathwater!!

I would say the one thing Cook doesn't deserve is the abuse that some of you have heaped on him on here, he doesn't deserve that and I honestly believe he did his very best, even turning out just the day after his Dad died. So shame on the abusers, I've no doubt you'll be abusing Mr McKenna in a few months if he doesn't win every game, must be nice to be so perfect.
