Butcher Steps Down as Supporters Club President
Monday, 18th Jul 2022 16:10

Blues legend Terry Butcher has stepped down as president of the official Supporters Club.

Former skipper and England international Butcher, 63, took on the role in March 2019.

“Terry’s been absolutely fantastic,” Supporters Club chairman Martin Swallow told Saturday’s Life’s a Pitch on BBC Radio Suffolk.

“You’d expect the president to make just the occasional appearance, but that’s not been the case with Terry, Terry came to every single meeting every month.

“Not only that, he always brought the food! As a committee, he has really done us proud and we love him to bits.”

The Supporters Club will name a successor to Butcher from the club’s former players in due course.

This season Butcher has returned to his regular role as a member of the Life’s a Pitch team.

What a guy he is. Met him and John Wark at Bury Town FC recently. Had a long chat with him. His stories are wonderful. If he wanted to take up another job he could easily become a comedian. All great stuff.

Top, top man and player. Cut him in half and has Ipswich Town running right through the middle of him. I've watched Butch from his debut at Town and even watched him in his early games at Glasgow Rangers ( where he was loved). I saw him play with blood down his shirt from a bad head injury where a very worried Bobby Robson said it was touch snd go because they couldn't stop the bleeding . The bloke is a bloody giant of a man. He showed guys , determination and pure pride in playing for this Club. He even kicked the budgies dressing room door in when we lost to them in the Milk Cup. He's no Budgie and the fans could relate to him. He's one of us. Thanks for the memories Terry.

I seldom comment on here, however, this guy was an absolute giant for this club all the best Terry one of the most honest and courageous players I've ever seen. I hope to see you around PR for many years to come.

Always remember by England fans with blood on his headband but i was at Luton forty odd years ago when he broke his nose so badly he was having blood transfusions for 9 days as they couldn't stop the bleeding.
As the guys say above, Legend. Not even sure that does him justice. Perhaps he has a new role with the club lined up. Life President would be a true tribute to him.

Come on Mark Ashton, make a fitting and meaningful offer. Local, legend, bleeds blue and white, brilliantly personable, wealth of knowledge and stories. Surely a proper role to encompass all these can be found.
