Life’s a Pitch Axed
Monday, 31st Oct 2022 20:20

BBC Radio Suffolk’s Saturday lunchtime show Life’s a Pitch has been axed as part of wide-ranging changes made to BBC local radio.

Life’s a Pitch began in August 2011 with host Mark Murphy joined by the show’s original legend-in-residence Kevin Beattie, TWTD’s Phil Ham, the original Tractor Boy and a wide variety of Town-related guests, from Blues stars of the past and present to club staff and supporters from all over the globe.

The show was initially broadcast exclusively from the studio but eventually it moved to Cobbold Stand boxes and then the Far Post Bar ahead of home games, and then the FanZone.

Terry Butcher took over as the legend-in-residence following Beattie’s death in 2018, while a younger Tractor Boy joined the team.

The pandemic and its aftermath saw the show cancelled for two seasons before it returned at the start of this campaign.

However, the BBC has announced significant cuts to its local radio programming with the 12-2pm Saturday slot set to be filled by a show shared with the BBC stations in Essex, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Three Counties Radio at some point in the new year.

Live sports programming, such as BBC Radio Suffolk’s commentary on Town matches, will not be affected by the changes.

Maybe an opportunity for Town Radio: broadcast locally from FPR studios from two hours before until kick off. I'd tune in on the way... c'mon Town, your turn...

Crikey - that is terrible news. I love listening to the show while in the car on our way to PR. It helps connect the fans/team/club etc. and make us feel like one.
I will miss it.
Edmundo has the right idea - get Town Radio up and running and broadcast from PR for the two hours leading up to match.

I listen to the program pre match all the time.
Such a shame the BBC feels it is necessary to remove local programming in favour of regional and national stuff. That's completely at odds with the idea of setting up the local stations to start with. They may as well bin them off and launch Radio East Anglia or some such.
How much does it actually cost to run the programme anyway. It's not as if the presenters are on Match of the Day salaries....

Well done Bert. It is political first and foremost and then . and economic. This is an indirect consequence of this worthless and incompetent tory government that has no desire to have information channels that aren't like the tory poodle press...complete lapdogs and subservient to their political agenda.
Over to local radio and maybe our American owners will instigate our own ITFC radio programme now to take over

I've not been a listener but it will have undoubtedly had its base - I'm not celebrating this, perhaps it even benefits most those that don't get to Itfc that much therefore there is a community benefit.

In reality it's not something the bbc should be providing when the market can provide, there is a gap here for Pods, Archant and ITFC tv.

My concern only would be fragmentation, some subscription based, some not, it might not actually lead to a better quality product, it might not reach people it reached in the past when there are new barriers for listening that didn't come with the bbc.

I think this is a real shame. This show had become part of the matchday ritual which we all love. But the BBC manage their own budgets and make their own choices about what they do with the eye watering c£5billion (yes BILLION!) income that they fritter away each year. It matters not how much the hysterical people on here scream and shout, it is the BBC which makes the decisions what to fund, not the government. Clearly the BBC establishment would rather hose away hundreds of millions of pounds on their dubious current affairs programs and ex Footballer Match of the Day presenters than support local radio. Shutting down this popular local show will achieve such a paltry saving compared with what is squandered on their vanity projects. It is BBC priorities driving this decision not the government.

Another example of the Tories applying pressure on the BBC ; sad sign of the times but a clear sign we need an election now to banish this government to the sidelines and get a new one in that respects local tradition and virtues

Workingblue: it is the indirect consequence of this government that ultimately brings about the demise of these local traditions and not a BBC policy to scrap. This government is only interested in its self and sod the nation and the working people

I am not a fan of the BBC , it is out of date and I no longer pay the TV licence and don't watch. Also I refuse to login so no longer able to listen on my Alexa so not going to miss it. just another nail in the BBC coffin , nothing worth watching on TV anyway.

Another example of the woke anti British broadcasting company, only want people who tick a box on the tv/radio, perhaps if why didn't waste money on idiots like lineker and all the lefty snowflakes they could afford to keep local radio going. Refund the BBC now

Defund the BBC

Some people on this site seem to blame everything on the Government! The BBC waste millions not unlike the NHS in poor management, throwing money at crazy box ticking initiatives. The amount of free money they are given and waste is incredible so take off your political agenda glasses for once and get in the real world. All the people that wanted handouts during the pandemic and energy crisis are most likley the same people that complain about cuts when it has to all be paid back!!

As with most bizarre rants railing against ‘woke' or ‘anti-British' culture the post above is almost as meaningless to not warrant response -but let's just be clear these cuts are almost entirely because the BBC IS effectively being defunded. Successive Conservative governments, since 2010, have cut (in real terms) the BBC's public funding by around 35% (by freezing the licence fee). The fact that the government is financially and publicly supported by private media companies (who naturally wish to see the competition disappear) is presumably coincidental. As is the fact that impartial journalism tends to talk the truth to power, something which governments don't really like (and, thanks to our electoral system, the governments we end up with are largely Tory). As for being ‘anti-British' - you go around the world and pretty much the last thing regarded as being ‘great' about this country is the quality of the BBC which, because of the way it's funded means it spends money on things like the World Service and yes, local radio, - things which lose money hand over fist and could never be provided by a private company. It's presenters are paid far, far less than commercial channels. For 44p a day to have a national broadcaster which puts out decent content and is well regarded the world over seems like good value to me. But you know … Brexit means Brexit…er…

Swoody if you want to “get in the real world” actually look into the studies on the efficiency of the BBC and the NHS. All of the global studies show that particularly the latter are incredibly efficient with the money they spend - we spend far less on healthcare per person than most advanced countries in the world and the ‘outcomes' are very high, despite this. Of course some are ideologically opposed to their structure or funding, and of course some things could be done better, but statistically the NHS is very, very ‘efficient'. Just again, massively underfunded.

Swoody: I think you need to wake up and smell the coffee.Heed the wise words of d77sgw and then you will have a better grasp of what is happening and the ramifications of this poor government's policies and their impact on our daily lives.

What the BBC should be cutting is the millions spent on soaps and other reality tv programmes. We should not be paying a licence fee for this repeat programme service either. Get it commercial and make it pay for its self.

No doubt Churchmans is capable of listening to the programme and still getting to the ground. Politics affects economic decisions so nobody should be surprised if this excellent football forum trespasses into the political arena in order to give a view on why decisions are taken. The party in power will see a huge backlash if they start to undermine the independence of the BBC. As for leftie views, strange isn't it that when in power both the Tories and Labour whinge about the BBC. That must mean they get things about right in their scrutiny role as does the NHS in its role in keeping us well with increased demands. Ok, back to footie now.
