Town to Host Rotherham in FA Cup Third Round
Monday, 28th Nov 2022 19:23

Town have drawn Championship Rotherham United at home in the third round of the FA Cup.

The Blues, whose tie was the final one out of the hat in this evening's draw which was held at Anfield, last appeared in the third round draw in 2018/19, the season in which they were relegated from the Championship.

Third round ties will take place over the weekend of Saturday 7th January.

Town and the Millers, who are currently 16th in the Championship, have never previously met in a cup competition, but the Blues have had a poor record against the South Yorkshire side in recent years having won only one of the last nine games between the clubs, losing seven.

Last season, Rotherham won 1-0 at the New York Stadium - as they have the last four times they have hosted the Blues - in the most recent meeting between the sides in April as the Millers won promotion from League One by finishing second, having run out 2-0 victors at Portman Road earlier in the campaign.

The tie will see Blues striker Freddie Ladapo face the club he left in the summer prior to joining Town having spent three years in South Yorkshire.

Town, who won 3-0 away at Bracknell in round one and defeated Buxton 4-0 at home in the second on Sunday, last made it beyond round three back in 2009/10 and most recently progressed more than two rounds in 2006/07.

The Blues' home League One match against Morecambe, which was previously scheduled for Saturday 7th January, will move as a result of Town making it through to the third round.

At home and a good chance to measure up against an average championship side if we believe we can get in the championship and progress we need this challenge a winnable game and hope for big name at home in the next round

Sadly this is a nothing tie, they won't bring many, the gate will be mediocre and injuries replays and an extended run aren't really what we need. Whilst everybody will have romantic notions of a cup run, anything that distracts us from the league is an annoyance so i was praying for a PL side away where we could have a great day out with a massive following, a really good day financially and the opportunity to focus 100% on winning the league.

I feel about as excited about this as i do taking the bins out….

Classic bogey team. They always seem to be able to 'bully' and out muscle us. But we've improved since last time we played them. I think home advantage will see us to a narrow win. Anyway, will lay down a marker for the kind of opposition we're hoping to meet next season.

They want to stay in the Championship and will not let a cup run potentially upset their plans to not get relegated. We'll win.

We want to get promoted and will not let a cup run potentially upset our plans to get promoted. They will win.

4 - 4 That's the only result that makes any sense :)

Maybe we'll play a top team in the final. Until then one game at a time :) I predict it will be Blackburn away in the next round...

Hundred Grand to the winner should be a good enough reason to field a decent team to progress.

I don't think it is a pointer to how we may fair in the championship! A one off cup game and very likely depending on both teams injury situation going into the match, both will feel the most important thing is the league. Winning won't mean we are a championship side and losing won't mean we will struggle in the championship!

Glad to see most of you are thinking positive about this game, not me, as Town will be making their usual 7 or 8 changes with promotion the priority. I would love a couple run.

So if we win you will say we are a championship team and if we lose you will say we have much to do and are nowhere near ready!

Too many moving parts in a one off cup game to determine an argument either way! Example beating Arsenal in the league cup a few seasons back didn't mean we were a premier league side!!!

7 or 8 changes paddy, did you notice the team put out on Sunday?

This is a one off game and will not be a gauge of our championship credentials. Both Rotherham and ourselves have far more important things to play for Rotherham are currently just 3 points from the relegation places and we are fighting to get promoted. Expect both teams to field weakened teams. So not the most glamorous of ties.

Well judging by the team picked last Sunday we should have a reasonable team, IF Rotherham do likewise I fully agree this could be a good indicator how we cope with a mid-table championship side. Let's forget about this bogey side rubbish we have overcome the live Sky football curse! COYB!

There is a trend amongst certain Supporters to devalue the result of any game !! - my no more confidence in conviction than that ? - of course this match will be an indicator of where we stand against nothing more than a Average Championship side, at best.
Is there a Team that doesn't take the FA Cup seriously …. ?? - if there is, then Supporters are being short changed in my opinion.
Let's not start seeing ‘excuses' already - just in case of such … !!!

Ok, it may not be the most exciting draw but I would imagine that Rotherham see us as equals or more given our position in League One. League games in the past against them exposed our lack of aerial threat so plenty of time for KMcK to work on that. We started the Buxton game with an unexpected strong team so I now expect more of the same unless injuries say otherwise.

I feel i have been short changed for years and like many others don't bother to attend cup games. Managers tell us how serious they are about cup games and then put out weakened teams. Rotherham are proving how difficult it is to stay in the championship and are in another relegation struggle this season just 3 points off the third team from bottom. I expect us to get promoted this season but we must invest heavily if we are to stay in the championship. I agree whole heartily with Terry Butcher that we have probably only 2 or 3 players of championship quality.

Linkboy13. So was ita weak team v bracknell or buxton? Doubt it will be v rotherham neither. Get ur pictures, but that's what happened in the past. So far mckenna has stuck to what he said at the fans forum, that he'll play a strong team in the fa cup.

With 5 all premier league matches, the cup draws could open up for a lower league team to have a good run this year.Who knows could be us 🤔
