Plymouth Back On Top as Pilgrims and Barnsley Win
Tuesday, 21st Mar 2023 22:08

Plymouth and Barnsley were the winners of this evening’s two games in League One, results which see Argyle return to the top of the table.

The Pilgrims won 2-0 at Accrington Stanley, the Lancastrians having been reduced to 10 men early in the second half.

In a topsy-turvy game at Oakwell, the Tykes went into a 2-0 first-half lead, former Blues striker James Norwood netting the second, before Wednesday pulled the scoreline back to 2-2.

However, with the Owls looking the most likely winners, a defensive slip led to Barnsley restoring their lead and in injury time they scored again to win 4-2, ending the Owls’ club record 23-match unbeaten run and knocking them off the top of the table.

Wednesday and the Tykes have a game in hand on the Blues and two on Argyle.

Whether the Barnsley result is good or bad depends whether we are looking to win the league or just trying to be runners up. Wednesday have just dropped 5 points out of 6

Town v Barnsley just got even bigger. Let's go...
Plymouth will drop points, we just need to be perfect here on in.

Thing is, to say SW just dropped 5 points, we are hoping they continue to drop points, which there is no guarantee in that. By the 1st we could be looking at being 9 points behind them, 2 behind Plymouth and joint with Barnsley. Like people are saying, all we can do is perform like we can and get those wins. Just pray some of these teams slip up.

Tough to call if it's good or bad good if we are still going for her top spot but bad as brings Barnsley closer to us If we can win our games then we can catch them
And this makes it easier to catch them but as already been said we need to keep winning.

No surprise that Plymouth won at Accrington but Wednesday was a surprise. Barnsley may be on a good run but our goal difference is way better than them. Plymouth and Wednesday will drop points. With the team we have now we are going to win this league with 102 points!! Mosey holding the trophy aloft on the Town Hall in May.

If we play our best team and play to our potential, we will win every game left this season, that's all we need to focus on, not what the others are doing, none of the other 3 teams are as good as us, so hold on tight!!!

You've got to think Sheff Wed fans are thinking ‘You go on 23 game unbeaten streak, half a season and the first game you lose you drop to second place, wtf?'

Barnsley are a big threat for the autos...they're currently top of the form table and have done the double over Wednesday, this could go down to the wire but personally feel the Owls will take one of those places.

We can only focus on ourselves.
The other Teams also competing for the top two will drop some but not many points over the remaining 8, 9, 10 games and goal difference will be key on the final day.
The shame is that all four Teams will end up with a ridiculous number of points never seen before and two will end up in the playoffs.
No pressure then!!

I would have thought it impossible for Barnsley to make the top 2 a few weeks ago, give the gap & the run of fixtures they had, but we can't underestimate the form they are in.
We are rightly proud of our extraordinary run of 6 league wins in a row, without conceding, so we are ahead in the form table as they ONLY have 5 wins & a draw. But, their last 6 games include wins over Plymouth 3-0, Sheffield 4-2, Derby Co 4-1 & Wycombe Wanderers 1-0. Also they are W10 D2 L0 over the last 12 games.
As FatBoyTim points out, Sheffield Wednesday dropped a place tonight, with only 2 fixtures on, having lost for the first time in 24 games; this is a crazy league where teams can go on extraordinary runs & nothing can be taken for granted.
There are 4 sides capable of winning automatic promotion still, although Sheffield Wednesday & Plymouth Argyle still have the edge ... for now.

any team above us losing is a good result..the pressure is more evenly spread as 4 teams fight for 2 spots....

The results were not bad for us
The pattern of a team in competition dropping points continues,
There not all going to drop points at the same time, they are were they are for a reason, however we keep picking more points then those around us, which we are doing, we go up.

We're going to win the league, stop worrying about what teams behind us are doing and start focusing on what teams above us aren't doing. Town and Barnsley top two for me, proper football teams. Wednesday just 9 units and banahan playing hoofball, Plymouth have ridden their luck all season. I also wouldn't be surprised if Peterborough or Wycombe snuck on the playoffs and won it ; )

I'd have preferred Sheff Wed to run away with it, Barnsley to lose, and hope Plymouth drop off. But now we have to work with what we have - so let's beat Barnsley!

brendenward35 added 07:07 - Mar 22
I thought Sheffield Wednesday were the better team over 90 mins difference was Barnsley took their goals better. If we play our best then we will beat them as their defense wasn't great last night. Keep Norwood quiet and their other striker we stand a good chance of beating them. Now Sheffield Wednesday dropping points our chance to claim 2nd or even 1st spot.
