Former Blues Boss Hurst Returns to Shrewsbury
Wednesday, 24th Jan 2024 12:38

Former Blues boss Paul Hurst has been reappointed the head coach of League One Shrewsbury Town.

Hurst left the Shrews, who he had taken to the League One play-off final the previous season, to become Town manager in the summer of 2018 but his spell lasted only 15 games and one win before he was sacked in the October.

The 49-year-old will again be joined at the Croud Meadow by his Town assistant Chris Doig, the duo having left Grimsby Town after just under three years in charge last October.

“It was a tough decision to part company with both Matt Taylor and Marcus Bignot [former head coach and assistant],” director of football Micky Moore told the Shrewsbury club site. “Both of them did their best to bring results to the football club.

“But following the game at Peterborough [a 2-1 defeat], I sat down with the chairman, and we decided a change was needed for us to move forward.

“Once that was agreed I presented a shortlist of names to the chairman - following the same procedure as when we appointed Matt.

“I recommended Paul Hurst would be the standout candidate and the chairman agreed.  Having managed against Paul since 2009, we have a long-standing relationship.

“I have followed his career carefully over the years and the discussions we have held over the last few days have been really positive.

“I look forward to having a great working relationship with both Paul and Chris going forward.

“We are delighted they have decided to return to the football club. They both enjoyed an outstanding time here previously and we are looking forward to welcoming them back.”

Shrewsbury are currently 20th in the third tier and have lost six of their last seven.

Tractorboy in HK. The championship players who left, were actually nothing to do with him. Garnerxwanted to go back up north. Mcgoldrick had told mccartgy in thd January thst he wanted to move nearer his family, which is why he didn't playcrest of that season(not due to injury). And Waghorn wanted to leave. Only needed to be at Braintree and barnet in preseason, to see he had no interest in being here( clearly been tapped up by derby). So while he can be blamed for signing too many lower lge players, he can't be blamed for those who left. Was beyond his control.

In terms of ITFC managers (that had a decent amount of time) I would say Duncan, Jewell, Keane and Lambert are the ones that I feel failed the club. People may say Cook as well, but for me although he didn’t get the job done in the end he did massive ground work to set up a platform for KMc to work the magic. Just my opinion of course….

Ultimately you need to experience the lows to fully appreciate the highs. Let’s not dwell on the past. I don’t personally think it was his short tenure that caused our demise, more the ownership and poor leadership prior. I wish him well for the future.

I have no hesitation in saying that Hurst was the club’s worst manager in living memory. However, we should be thankful as due to his ineptitude, we were relegated. This in turn led us to getting a new owner.

Sacked by Grimsby for dragging them down League 2, then gets a job in League 1. The word Astonished doesn't even come close.

The meltdown interview he gave after Exeter away in the League Cup.

Throwing players under the bus for not wanting to turn up to a game Mick would have played the kids in.

Legacy of Mick's team, I'm afraid it was always going to be difficult. Easy to say that now, but not so obvious at the time.

We needed a better manager who could've recruited players from a higher level. Money and ambition wasn't there.
