Keeper Williamson On as Outfield Sub For Chelmsford
Sunday, 20th Oct 2024 10:17

Young Town goalkeeper Woody Williamson made a surprise outfield debut for loan club Chelmsford City against National League South leaders leaders Farnborough yesterday afternoon.

The Clarets had already used all their outfield subs when late on midfielder Kane Crichlow suffered an injury and Scotland U19 international keeper Williamson was brought on in his place.

The game was in its 96th minute when Williamson was introduced but there was still time for the 18-year-old to come close to scoring a dramatic equaliser, his back-post header going just the wrong side of the post.

As it was, the 13th-placed Clarets lost 2-1, fellow Blues loanee Osman Foyo having scored the Essex side’s goal, the 19-year-old’s sixth of his spell.

Elsewhere, Williamson’s Town U21s teammates were beaten 5-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly at West Ham United on Friday.

I didn't know that if you have used all your outfield subs, you can then bring a goalkeeper on that plays outfield.

@slade1 It took me a few times to read it, but I think what the story means is that the team didn't have enough outfield players on the bench (eg less than 5 players) and thus had to bring Woody on as a field player.

Can he play right/back?

Looks like we found a new number 9. On field for 1 minute and a chance on target!
