McKenna: There's 27 Points to Play For, We're Still in the Fight Monday, 31st Mar 2025 15:55 Town manager Kieran McKenna insists that his side are still in the fight to avoid relegation, despite being nine points from safety with only nine matches left to play.
The Blues, who are 18th in the Premier League, have a big week ahead of them with a trip to AFC Bournemouth on Wednesday followed by a home match against Wolves, the team directly above them with a far superior goal difference in addition to their nine-point advantage, on Saturday.
“There's 27 points to play for and there's nearly a quarter of the season left, so we know from a points perspective we're certainly still in the fight,” McKenna said.
“And we know that things can change really, really quickly this week with one positive result or two positive results.
“So there's still absolutely that belief that we can compete till the end of the season in terms of league positions.
“But irrespective of that, we've got a quarter of our first Premier League season in 22 years left. I think whether we were 16th, whether we were one point off the line where we want to be, or if we were 24 points off the line we'd want to be, I couldn't really understand or legislate for any difference in the mindset here and the difference in how we prepare and the difference of how we go into the games.
“We need to go to every game, give absolutely everything we've got, try and do ourselves and our supporters proud and hope that we get good results from that, and that that will leave us at the end of the season in a position that we're really, really happy with.
“So that's still absolutely the focus and belief, and we hope that a good week this week can really contribute to that, but I don't see that changing any time soon.”
McKenna says he won’t be watching Wolves play West Ham at Molineux on Tuesday evening.
“No, I don't think I will,” he said. “Our focus needs to be on ourselves. We know it's not a position where there's too much point putting focus on anyone else's games.
“We know we need to go and deliver performances and get points on the board ourselves, and we're going to have to do that at a really, really high rate over the next nine games.
“Of course, we'll check the score, but I think I'll save my mental energy for the things we can try and control.”

Select the right players to give us half a chance then, the ones you signed to play in the Prem for 10s of millions not league 1 lads you signed for 250k, 1 mill etc good for then but mostly not for now!

Why are the players who played for us still taking the heat from the Numbskulls over this relegation? They have been solid performers, if not better than, the big money signings this season, and we have had some of our worst results when few of our "League One" promotion players have not really featured. It's nonsense. They were never League One players, they were signed from the likes of Arsenal, Everton, Leicester, Middlesbrough, Leeds, and co. before they played for us. We signed Championship quality players when we were in League One, the issue is we spent over the odds on Championship players from Hull, West Brom, Sunderland, Blackburn, Burnley and Luton to try and stay in the Premier League, absolutely nothing to dow ith the "League One" players and everything to do with us getting our recruitment for this league totally wrong.

Weird to think that in 5 days, two vital games, we may well know it's as good as over. Or we might have renewed hope. Fingers crossed for the latter.

@Saffronwaldonblue Lol you have made my day, you are right we signed all those elite players from Prem teams who saw the potential of how good they could be and sold them off 2 league's lower. Your so right they all been rock solid, why on earth did we buy anybody at all what a waste, well if relegated we may aswell sell those signings and go back to the good old days, what nonsense. Championship is their level you are right bar a couple who have adapted okay. By your own theory then we have done the same thing we bought players in league 1 we thought could keep us in Championship whilst adding but we got an unexpected promotion early and so with relegation very much likely in August they stuck to plan and rather than pay for some over the hill Prem players they were now in the position to get the ground Prem ready and the trains facilities top notch and sign the cream of the Championship who are young but huge potential so not only assets but give us a fantastic chance of returning in one go, by keeping them and letting the lads signed in league 1 continue elsewhere, not all but some. Everyone going on about Delap leaving, he is on a five year contract and Ashton would not of been stupid enough to do a get relegated I'm off clause he only scored 6 last season and 10 this year so far, a club is going to have to pay a very tidy sum especially as Man City have a sell on fee. The best business for City and us would be for them to buy him back. Is it worth selling Delap for 35-45 million or keeping him to get us straight back up which is worth alot more than that. I think they all stay and that's why they were bought, unless they do a deal with Spurs and we get one of theirs in return plus big fee. Fed up all this league1 / Championship heroes nonsense now, yes brilliant times, yes heroes forever but the aim is to keep growing and become an established Prem team and we aren't doing that with Morsy, Taylor, Burns, Luongo, Walton and Co it's ridiculous to even think it. And yes Mckenna deserved a new contract and not to be sacked like every other club did as we weren't expected to be in the Prem yet but we are now probaly a season or 2 ahead of schedule and gone from a hopeful midtable/playoff Championship team to what should be a title contender team, but Mckenna hasn't covered himself in Prem glory at the moment and hopefully if relegated he has bought the quality to get us straight back up and strengthens, not sell all our new players, rely on the old guard when we know they aren't Prem standard. If someone took a punt on Mckenna in Prem I wouldn't be concerned if anything it may be a change is needed but I don't think he is going he would of been sacked by now otherwise. Time to look forward with ambition and look back with pride, its football!

We have the basis of a good team. We need a bit of luck, no screw-ups and to focus at the end of tight games. It’ll help if we have a pretty consistent starting XI for the last games of the season too.

He's not going to watch Wolves v West Ham. That is amazing, unforgiveable and a dereliction of duty. We are playing them on Saturday - might be useful.

@carberry Totally agree, Mckenna should absolutely be watching the game tomorrow night that's 2 teams out of the 9 we play. I genuinely believe he thinks his system works and its only fine margins. It's like oh well no right back so we put O'Shea but we have Ben Johnson, no Phillps possibly and it's oh well we play Morsy but Enciso can play there, Davis seems undroppable by Mckenna when Townsend is a better Defender. He says we will fight to the end but with same style and formation and if we do take the lead he makes loads subs and we go behind within minutes. It's just unbelievable.

False hope if and I say if we beat Bounmouth and Wolves just 3 points behind Wolves and then Arsenal Newcastle and Chelsea. The Prem has killed my love of football I am afraid. It was a must keep KmK when Town got promoted. Next season if he goes and Town sell Delap, Hutchinson I won’t worry as it’s only the Championship next season with only the prospect of winning promotion to the Circus which is very likely, just look at Sheff U and Burnley up down up down same for Leicester and Southampton up down up down. Just look at the wage bill now and ticket price increase the Prem as only made it more expencive for the fans who go week in and week out. RIP Football

The gap between Premier league and Championship is widening. The top 3 or 4 are miles ahead in the Championship with 6th place 20 plus points off the top two. It was similar last season. The bottom of the Prem is becoming isolated too. which again is like last season. We have a group of 7/8 clubs now who are too good for one league but not good enough for the other. It's a worrying trend for the game.

I think McKenna has seen enough of Wolves this season to know what to expect best to concentrate on our own game.
