Summer Rumours Start
Summer Rumours Start
Sunday, 4th May 2003 20:58

The summer round of transfer rumours got off to a rip-roaring, speculation-tastic start in Sunday's tabloids with a number of Town players and a former manager getting a mention.

Goalkeeper Andy Marshall is apparently wanted by promoted Portsmouth, according to one tabloid. Harry Redknapp is after an extra keeper for next season and, although Marshall may not be an obvious candidate for a Premiership move, Redknapp might consider him as a back-up keeper he could probably get on the cheap, if not for free. However, we're distinctly sceptical.

Striker Alun Armstrong is being linked with a £100,000 move to Coventry which is a little surprising given that he was made available on a free transfer a week or so ago. Ignoring the price aspect, Armstrong was in action for the Town reserves at Coventry on Tuesday, so they will have had a chance to see him in action then.

Skipper Matt Holland is claimed to be part of a not overly convincing swap deal which would take him to Manchester City and bring Shaun Goater and Gerard Wiekens to Suffolk.

Rumours that Goater and Wiekens would be coming to Town started virtually the day that Joe Royle came to Portman Road and there is little to suggest that this story is anything more than speculation.

Holland is unlikely to move to Manchester while the Blues want cash for any players leaving and are unlikely to be in a position to pay fees (Kevin Keegan has already said he wants a fee for Goater), or get anywhere near the City pair's current wages.

Former manager George Burley is said to be in a two-horse race with Klaus Toppmoller for the Fulham job.
