Veteran midfielder Jim Magilton has been named as the Blues' new captain. The Northern Irishman had been expected to get the role after replacing Matt Holland on some of the rare occasions that the former skipper missed out last season.

Magilton told the club site he was proud to receive the armband on a permanent basis: "I'm delighted to take on the responsibility of skippering the team.

"It's a real privilege to play for such a great club as Ipswich Town and to be asked to lead the team is a big honour.

"Now I can't wait for the season to start and take on the challenge of getting this club back in the Premiership where it belongs.

"I have played the best football of my career at Ipswich Town and it's the best club I have been at."

Magilton, along with Richard Naylor and Fabian Wilnis, is set to sign a new one-year deal with the club later this week.
