Joe: Defending Abysmal
Joe: Defending Abysmal

Angry Town boss Joe Royle labelled his side's defending "abysmal" after the Blues dropped to the bottom of Division One in the wake of their 4-1 defeat at the hands of West Brom.

All four goals came from defensive errors - three from set-pieces - and Royle was thoroughly unimpressed with the display: "I can't be happy - our defending was abysmal. There were two free headers, a goalkeeping error and an own goal. That shows just how shoddy we were.

"We have let in four goals and it's not as if we we're under siege. We have got to stop giving away silly goals and we needed to be more threatening at the other end.

"We passed the ball well and we probably had most of the possession but we didn't hurt them enough. We need to break the ice - we need to get that three-pointer.

"When you're in bottom place there's only way to go and that's up. I am confident we can do so much better."

Royle is also still hoping to add target man Duncan Ferguson to his squad on loan after having an earlier attempt blocked this week: "Duncan is a big impact player and he would make a big impact for us if we could get him.

"He's fit again and while I'm certainly not saying we will get him, the possibility of it is certainly not over."

Ferguson scored from the penalty spot for Everton after 88 minutes in the 2-2 draw with Newcastle today after coming on as a 63rd minute substitute.

West Brom boss Gary Megson was unsurprisingly pleased with his side's performance: "We are getting better at a lot of things but there is still room for improvement.

"I thought Gaardsøe played well - he has been threatening to score a goal since he joined.

"His goal was a marvellous finish, it settled us down and gave us a platform to build from.

"I still think we're nowhere near the finished article. But we are getting there individually, there were a number of better performances."
