Darren Bent scored and Matt Richards won his first cap as the England U21s beat the Ukraine 3-1 at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium. Richards played the first 45 minutes at left-back, Bent coming on as a second half sub.

England dominated the first half which meant their defence was rarely tested. At the break, returning manager Peter Taylor switched things around, Richards one of a number of players replaced. Town loan target, Arsenal's Justin Hoyte, came on at right-back for the second 45 minutes.

Bent took to the field in the 58th minute, winning his sixth cap. The Town striker netted his now obligatory last-gasp goal - although even later than usual - in the 92nd minute, after good work from Dean Ashton and Peter Whittingham, his third for the U21s.

Aston Villa loanee Carlton Cole had netted England's first two goals on 13 and 42. The Ukraine struck back through Oleksander Aliyev in the 88th minute.

Town midfielder Ian Westlake was on the bench but didn't get his first run-out in an England U21 shirt.
