Town England Connection Rears its Head Again
Town England Connection Rears its Head Again

Rather surprisingly it has emerged that new England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has an Ipswich Town connection. Although never a Town manager, unlike two of his England predecessors, Eriksson spent a sizable anount of time watching Town in the seventies. The then manager of IFK Gothenburg travelled to England to try to get some insight into the English game and with Portman Road a temple of one of the finest examples of the English game at the time, as well as being closest to Felixstowe, it was here that he watched his football.

As well as games Eriksson watched Town train over a period of several years and became well-known to many at the club and is a close friend of Bobby Robson. The Newcastle boss was also working in Portugal at the same time as Eriksson was manager of Benfica.

This all bodes well for the future given that both the most successful England managers of the past had an Ipswich connection!

The previous NewsNet stated that David Johnson is likely to be playing up front with David Johnson. That should have read with Marcus Stewart. Sadly this means no recall for the 1970s moustache king of Portman Road David Johnson.
