![]() Friday, 10th Dec 2004 09:54 Town will sign Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Darren Currie today in a £250,000 deal. The 30-year-old recently impressed in Town's 1-0 victory over the Seagulls at Portman Road. Previously with Barnet and Wycombe, Currie joined Brighton in the summer and quickly became a fans' favourite. Currie, the nephew of former Sheffield United and Leeds legend Tony Currie, started his career at West Ham but failed to make the grade with the Hammers. He moved to Shrewsbury and Leyton Orient on loan before joining the Shrews permanently in February 1996 for £70,000. After a short spell with Plymouth, he switched to Barnet where he started to make a name for himself. In 2001 he joined Wycombe for £200,000, leaving for Brighton on a free in the close season. A deadball specialist, Currie looks to be the wide man Town fans have been calling for the Blues to sign since the beginning of the season. The fee is the first serious money Town have spent on a player since November 2001 when they paid £3 million for Marcus Bent. Since then the only cash outlay was a small payment to Ford United for Jerrome Sobers and Ben Patten and £10,000 to Heybridge Swifts when James Pullen made his senior debut. Currie is discussing personal terms and will have a medical this morning and will go straight into the Town squad for tomorrow's game at QPR.
