Boss Joe Royle has hailed skipper Jim Magilton a massive influence after the Northern Irishman decided to remain with the Blues for another year. Magilton had been offered a two-year player-coach deal with Bristol Rovers.

Royle told the club site: "I have always wanted Jim here and it's a big boost for the club that he has decided to stay with us.

"He's a massive influence around the place, his enthusiasm comes through to all the players and don't underestimate what a big player he is for us on the pitch either.

"We saw Teddy Sheringham being voted the most valuable player in the Championship last season at the age of 39, so players well into their 30s are still making their mark and Jim is the same."

Royle says he was aware of Bristol Rovers approaching Magilton: "I think there was dialogue between Jim and their manager Ian Atkins but perhaps not much more than that.

"Jim's decision was not about what club he wanted to play for, that was always going to be here because he loves the place. It was more about what direction his career was going to head in the next 12 months.

"He's decided to concentrate on the playing side and we're delighted."
