Town threw away a two-goal half-time lead as Preston left Portman Road with a 3-2 win. Jon Macken put the Blues ahead from the spot, then Alan Lee added a second as there looked to be only one winner. However, the visitors scored three times in 12 minutes via Nugent, Chilvers and Whaley.

Town president Sir Bobby Robson has resumed his role alongside Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton after being given the all-clear by his medical team. Robson underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour at a Newcastle hospital on August 23rd.
