Worthington Win Wed 25th Aug 1999 12:31
Town overcame plucky Brentford 2-0 in last night's Worthington Cup First Round Second leg, winning the whole tie 4-0 on aggregate. In an atmosphere much like a reserve game Town put in an understated performance scoring through James Scowcroft and Jamie Clapham.
Johnson for England? Tue 24th Aug 1999 14:42
Former England and Town man Kevin Beattie has shocked football today by claiming that David Johnson is the man to play alongside Alan Shearer for England. Johnno has gone goal crazy so far this season, notching up five goals in his first four games. The 22-year-old has already made one appearance for the England B team as well as playing in a couple of friendlies for Jamaica and is in the squad for their game with the USA in September. Because he has never played in a competitive international match he is still available for selection for England and indeed, as a British passport holder born outside the British Isles, any of the other home countries. Whether Kevin Keegan will agree with his former England collegue that Johnson is "the nearest thing to Michael Owen -lightning-quick and capable of frightening the life out of defenders." remains to be seen.
Veno No Show Tue 24th Aug 1999 12:21
Mark Venus will miss tonight's Worthington Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg tie with Brentford. The centre-half picked up a thigh problem during Saturday's victory over Bolton Wanderers. Apparently it is just a dead leg and should be OK for Saturday's game with Sheffield United. Other injury worry Richard Wright has recovered sufficiently to take his place between the sticks for his 133rd consecutive appearance. He has also been included in the England U21 squad for the Euro 2000 qualifiers against Luxembourg at home (Sept 3rd), and in Poland four days later. There is also a place for Kieron Dyer.
