Town have given on-loan striker Dean McDonald permission to play for Hartlepool in their FA Cup second round tie with Tamworth on Saturday. The Blues will therefore be unable to field McDonald in the competition once the 19-year-old's loan spell at Victoria Park is up.

Full-back Jay McEveley's season is over after scans revealed his torn medial ligament requires surgery. The loanee from Blackburn suffered the injury in the 2-1 defeat at Cardiff on Monday.

Owen Garvan is in the U18 squad as the Town youngsters begin their defence of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday with a third round tie against Leeds at Elland Road (KO 7.30pm). The game will be the 17-year-old's first since injuring his ankle in the first team game at home to Coventry in October.

Ten-man Town suffered late heartbreak as Cardiff's Jason Koumas netted a last minute winner. Fabian Wilnis was harshly red-carded on 13, Lewis Price saving the subsequent penalty, but Michael Ricketts soon put the Bluebirds in front. Jimmy Juan appeared to have saved a point before Koumas struck.
