Newspaper reports in the Midlands claim Town were amongst a number of Championship clubs targeting Liverpool striker Neil Mellor ahead of the transfer window's closure yesterday. Boss Joe Royle is known to rate Mellor, who made his senior debut for the Reds against Town in the Carling Cup at Anfield in 2002.

Chief executive Derek Bowden says Richard Naylor's surprise non-appearance against Preston North End on Monday was a result of the Blues being unable to gain confirmation that a player whose red card was being appealed was eligible to play. Naylor was harshly sent off against Millwall on Saturday and Town were keen for his dismissal to be overturned.
