A first half goal from Lee Hendrie put Villa ahead and a second half header from Dion Dublin had seemingly settled the game. However, a spirited fightback by the Blues in the latter stages saw Marcus Stewart notch his first of the season.

Holland Doubt Thu 07th Sep 2000 11:18
Town skipper Matt Holland is a doubt for Town's clash with Aston Villa on Saturday after aggravating his niggling ankle injury in last night's 2-1 loss at Leicester. Matt has made 171 consecutive appearances for Town since joining from Bourmemouth in August 1997 and will be hoping that the healing waters of Brighlingsea will allow him to continue this amazing run. I expect he's nipped off for a paddle already.

Naysmith In Tue 05th Sep 2000 13:27
Town may be ready to swwop for Hearts star Gary Naysmith after the full-back turned down a new contract with the Edinburgh club. It is thought that Naysmith was one of the two internationals George Burley bid for in the summer, but at that time Hearts manager Jim Jefferies thought that he could persuade last season's Scottish Young Player of the Year to sign a new deal. Now he is willing to listen to offers and Town could be one of the sides at the head of the queue. Jeffries said: "The present financial climate at the club means we cannot meet Gary's requirements. Gary has two years left on his current contract, and we have had talks about the possibility of topping up the deal within a couple of years."
