Jaime Peters put the Blues in front and Town were well on top until Jose Fonte’s equaliser was followed by referee Paul Taylor showing Jon Stead a hugely controversial red card just before the break. In the second half the numerical difference told and Palace netted through Neil Danns and Victor Moses.

The 24-year-old SC Freiburg keeper, who was on trial at Manchester United last month, was expected to stay for the full week but was recalled early to sit on the bench during his club’s 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Chief executive Simon Clegg says Town’s debt will continue to grow while the Blues continue to be a Championship club. The recently released accounts for the financial year ending June 2009 showed the club make a £10.32 million loss and its debt, almost entirely owed to Marcus Evans, rise to £35.7 million.

The Blues thought they’d broken the deadlock just before half-time via Stern John’s header but referee Andy Hall ruled it out for a push.
