Boss Joe Royle says he is "very, very hopeful" that the Blues will sign Cardiff City striker Alan Lee on a permanent deal next week. The two clubs are currently negotiating a fee for the Irish international.

On-loan midfielder Gavin Williams has completed his £300,000 move from West Ham. The fee was agreed last week with the Welsh international subsequently thrashing out a contract which will keep him at Portman Road until 2009.

The Blues got back to winning ways with a 1-0 defeat of Luton Town. Sub Ian Westlake struck on 69 from Darren Currie's excellent 40-yard pass from halfway. Earlier, strike pair Dean Bowditch and Danny Haynes had both missed good chances to put the Blues in front.
