Town boss Paul Jewell says he’ll spend the international break trying to lift his players for the trip to Hull City and the home game against his former club Derby County which follow the two-week gap. The break gives the Blues’ new loanees — Richie Wellens, DJ Campbell and Bilel Mohsni — a chance to work on their fitness and with their new team-mates.

Nathan Ellington netted his first goal of pre-season as a Town XI beat Blue Square Bet Premier side Braintree 1-0 at Cressing Road. The home team will feel themselves unlucky not to have got something from the game having had the better of the chances and with Ellington’s 25-yard second-half strike having taken a big deflection.

Town’s pre-season friendly at Colchester United was abandoned with eight minutes to go at 0-0 after U’s midfielder Andy Bond suffered a facial injury in a collision with his keeper Mark Cousins. Bond required lengthy treatment with the injury considered so severe that an ambulance was brought to the edge of the pitch causing the abandonment, with Bond eventually helped across to it with blood streaming down his face.

Boss Paul Jewell is expected to hand Kieron Dyer his first Portman Road start for Town in 12 years when Watford visit for this evening’s rearranged Boxing Day fixture (KO 7.45pm). Dyer was feeling a bit stiff after Saturday’s match at Leeds but looks set to be in Jewell’s starting XI against the Blues’ bogey side.

Academy defender Kurt Robinson won his third cap as the England U17 side beat Sweden 2-0 on Friday to qualify for the final of the Nordic tournament in Iceland. England had beaten Finland and the Faroe Islands earlier in the tournament.
