Town progressed to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup for the first time in 10 years after a comfortable 3-1 victory over Northampton at Portman Road, despite having gone behind. Liam Davis put the League Two side ahead but goals from Carlos Edwards, Damien Delaney and Tamás Priskin sealed the tie for the Blues.

Skipper David Norris netted his fifth goal of the season but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Blues from falling to a 2-1 defeat at Watford. Town had been the better side up to a two-goal Hornets salvo just before the break and got back on top in the closing stages after Norris’s goal but were unable to grab the equaliser.

Academy keeper Conor O’Donnell has been named in the Republic of Ireland squad for their UEFA U17 Championship first phase qualifiers in Malta next week. O’Donnell joined the Blues from his hometown club Buncrana Hearts in the summer.

Jason Scotland’s second strike for Town and an Adam Matthews own goal saw the Blues to a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City and into second place in the Championship. After a slow start Town, who were denied what looked like a certain penalty when Wickham was felled in the first half, went ahead after the break when Matthews headed past his own keeper, Scotland sealing the victory with 16 minutes remaining.
