Blues boss Paul Jewell says he’s well aware that fans are probably becoming fed up of hearing that he’s targeting new central defenders. The Town manager has spent the summer trying to add to his defensive ranks, but so far unsuccessfully with plenty of other clubs chasing the same targets.

Paul Jewell’s Town fell to their third home defeat in a week as an impressive Southampton side left Portman Road with a 5-2 win. The Saints were 3-0 in front at the break through Rickie Lambert (2) and David Connolly, however, Town fought back to 3-2 via Keith Andrews and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, but Adam Lallana added two more late on to seal a deserved victory.

Town crashed out of the Carling Cup at the first round stage as League Two Northampton deservedly came from behind to win 2-1 at Portman Road. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas put the Blues ahead with a first half cross-shot but goals from Ben Tozer and Paul Turnbull either side of half-time sealed the Cobblers’ place in round two.

A Town U18 side beat Whitton United 4-3 in an entertaining match at the King George V Playing Field on Saturday afternoon. Jon Leddy (pictured) put Town ahead before goals from Chris Williams and Kevin Inglis gave the hosts the lead. Jack Simmons and Elliot Scotcher then restored Town’s advantage before Marcus Josiah equalised, prior to an unfortunate own goal from Robbie Knott giving the Blues’ youngsters the win.
