Exams?
at 20:58 4 Jan 2021

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I have twins who are both in year 11, and just wanted to check if people took from tonight's announcement that all exams have been cancelled, or if some of the exams will be cancelled?

It was the wording "not possible or fair for all exams to go ahead this summer ......" that confused me. In my head, the 'all' could mean literally all of them are cancelled, or the all could be interpreted as not all of them will go ahead (but maybe core subjects like English and maths might for example).

I guess the details will come out, but I just thought I'd check in with the twtd community to see what other people's interpretation was.

Thanks

Dyer Burley combo

I like the Dyer and Burley idea to reconnect to what the club actually is, and I think a past player should be the next move for us. I think Evans should do everything possible to go and get Tony Mowbray. Ticks every possible box for me (other than the likelihood one).

A U-turn on GCSE and A-Level results then
at 21:03 17 Aug 2020

39% of teacher assessments had been lowered by the examining bodies, to bring this year's results in line with previous years. After today's announcement, an inflation on grades will now come from removing the 39% reduction. This year's results will now be significantly higher than any exam results ever published. I hope that answers your question, regarding grade inflation.

Thanks for your reply. I hadn't considered that primary school students tend to stay in one classroom for all their lessons, and that is a big detail compared to students moving around the secondary schools to get to their lessons. That's really why I wanted to open it up as a post, to help see what details I was missing, so thank you.

I think your question of if you can have socially distanced education, why wouldn't you, is an excellent one, and I completely agree, that if you can, you should.

Doesn't that reiterate the contradiction that I raised though. If our government think that socially distanced education is possible for primary school children, then why not open high schools also?

School Contradiction
at 14:51 11 May 2020

I'm a parent, and I am looking to gather some views on the primary school reopening, if anybody has some. No problem if not.

To me, the potential reopening of schools in early June looks unsafe. The biggest signal of this to me, is that if it were safe, then high schools would be reopened then also. Sunday's announcement made it clear that year 7, 8 and 9 students won't return before September, and instead high schools were covered with some wide brushstrokes of an 'ambition' to get students sitting exams next year (year 10 and 12) into school at some point before the summer holidays.

If it is unsafe to reopen the high schools, then the only conclusion for me is the primary school opening is unsafe, and a decision has been made based on economic benefit instead.

I understand the logic, regarding getting people back to work, and the need for childcare arrangements. I also understand that for parents, making childcare arrangement for a five year old in year one, is much more challenging than for a thirteen year old in year nine. However the clear contradiction in the decision, shows the government aren't following the science, but instead following the economy. We were told the economy would be second, behind safety, but to me this is clearly untrue on the school decision. Do you think I'm wrong in thinking this?

I understand that no decision has zero risk attached to it, and that perhaps some easing is needed so that the economy doesn't crumble to dust. It seems apparent that opening either a primary school or a high school would push the R value up by some amount. It just also seems very clear, that the R amount rise would be smaller for a high school when compared to a primary school (based on social distancing being easier to implement to 15 year olds compared with 5 year olds, and the school pick up and congregation of people being less for teenagers compared to young children). If we are easing out of this, don't we make decisions that rise R by the smallest amount possible?

Food Box
at 15:52 28 Mar 2020

I ordered a vegetarian box, and it included :

6 'Heck' meat free vegan sausages
350g Quorn mince
350g Quorn pieces
167g of vegetarian 'steak' slice
350g tub of tomato and basil pasta sauce
1 kg baby potatoes
3 mixed peppers
Broccoli
1kg carrots
3 large onions
350g cheddar
Salted butter
White sliced bread
500g penne pasta
Tin baked beans
Tin vegetable soup
Tin tomato soup
250g packet of long grain rice
1l of Cravendale semi skimmed milk
4 toilet rolls
2 kitchen towels

I'd agree feeding two people for £35 is unlikely, but, having said that I don't know why Morrisons have stated that on their website. My two issues are that at most there is £20-£25 worth of food there, at the most, so not great to see a supermarket taking advantage at this time. Secondly, I just found a different forum, and other people who ordered got the exact same contents at the start of the week. If they are boxing the same stuff to everyone, why not just list the contents of the box on the website (which they don't).

Just incidentally, I've read two comments from people who bought the meat box, saying theirs had arrived with chicken split open, which had then leaked over other goods. The meat box was the same contents as above, but the quorn items replaced with 10 rashers of bacon, 4 chicken breasts, 6 pork sausages, and 525g beef mince. That would probably provide a couple of extra meals compared the the vegetarian box I guess.

I hope this helps anyone considering it, to make a decision either way. It might be perfect for some people. I just wanted to post, because, there might be people like myself who are self employed, and needing to be really careful with money right now. My opinion is that it is about £10 too much for what is sent.

I read about Morrisons £35 food boxes earlier in the week, and thought they seemed a good idea. Website states box will feed two people for a week.

No chance. Mines just arrived, and £35 is a joke for what you get. To context, I'm a couple pounds under twelve stone, so not a big big eater.

It's a good idea from Morrisons, but no way should they be charging £35 for what they send.

Tax Years

Yes, based on what I've read, you would have to be earning less than usual. I have just read that the profit loss won't be calculated however, so whether you have lost 5% or 100% of work, you will still be entitled to an 80% grant.

Tax Years
at 21:23 26 Mar 2020

Sorry if it has already been discussed, but does anybody have a sense of whether this tax year (due to end 5th April) will be included in averaging the last three for self employed people?

Do you think the three years are :
April 2016 - April 2017
April 2017 - April 2018
April 2018 - April 2019

Or :
April 2017 - April 2018
April 2018 - April 2019
April 2019 - April 2020

Self Employed
at 23:31 25 Mar 2020

100% preparing for another kick in the face from the government tomorrow. The only good thing that might eventually come out of this, is that millions of people will now see how ridiculous our benefit system is. I was my mums full time carer before she sadly passed away, and was paid carers allowance of £62 a week. Very similar to the £94 sick pay currently being offered, it is quite literally impossible to survive on.

In the same way taser gun officers have to be tasered, I think any politician that thinks these amounts are acceptable, should be made to live off the amounts for three months, and see how they go.

Apparently going to be an announcement on Thursday for us self employed.

Is anybody feeling confident it will be at the 80% mark?

Hopefully for patients who don't have a mobile number on their medical file, the next step would be phone calls, and then sending post. I suppose text is just the first part of their roll out, because it is the quickest to implement.

I have been doing what the government ask, regarding staying home. I was trying to ascertain whether I'm classed as one of the 1.5 million the government spoke about on Sunday, regarding needing full shielding from social contact for twelve weeks. They spoke that people would be contacted, and so I was trying to work out if only those 1.5 million had been contacted by the NHS, or if everyone has. A lot of people on here have commented they were contacted by the NHS, but don't have underlying health conditions. I just think it would have been clearer if the NHS only contacted the 1.5 million people they spoke about this week, to avoid any confusion.

I understand it probably seems like something I would know, as to whether I have an underlying health condition or not, and therefore strange I would ask. The reason I did, was because I have asthma, and because there are different versions of asthma it's hard to know yourself how vulnerable the government consider you to be (even asthma uk are struggling to advise on their website). I don't think the government consider every asthma sufferer as high risk, and hence I was trying to ask who had been text from the NHS.

The only reason I would want to go out right now is to shop for food, and was trying to understand if I need to arrange for help with that for the next twelve weeks. Or, if I'd be okay to go out once a week, and get the bits and pieces needed.

It 'matters', because I don't want to ask for help from already stretched resources if not needed.

Thank you for that, it's put my mind at ease. Our government following South Korea's response to this would be very welcome, given how well they have done at stopping their spread. Appreciate everyone that took time to reply, thank you. I hope you all have a good day

You're right, I apologise. The message was from NHSNOREPLY, and read You must follow Government advice and stay at home. My asthma is quite well managed now (was bad when I was young), and so I was surprised to get a message from the NHS. I didn't think I would be in the group of people that needed complete shielding for twelve weeks, and I'm still unsure now to be honest. Was therefore trying to clarify if all received that message, or just who they were considering as vulnerable. Was wanting to seek clarification, so I don't ask for help regarding shopping, unless I have to.

Thanks for replying. I was reading one of the forum posts yesterday, about how some of the information coming out is confusing. Some people were saying it was very straight forward, and all the advise was clear, others felt the messages were conflicting. I feel conflicted on this issue now ... out of four replys, two people have said it is specific to underlying conditions, and two have said it is generic for all. I think the government could definitely try to be more concise, and have communicated their message clearer over the past ten days
