McKenna: Woolfy's Made It Clear He Wants to Go
at 07:34:34

I think our starting centre backs are better than Woolfenden and for his status in the club I do not see what has changed since he signed his contract extension in terms of his place in the pecking order of defenders. Of course it’s great to see local players in the side but I just think the starting two are better and Kipre from the 78 minutes or so at Bromley looked good as well. I think since he left the abilities of Burgess have been inflated. I thought he was a solid centre back but was quite slow and had limited passing range. I am sure there is a technical term but I thought the areas of the pitch he could pass to are less than Greeves (so you have a player with the ball facing down the pitch towards the opposition goal and imagine there is a protractor in front of them. I think Greeves can more easily play a pass more quickly easily and accurately for more degrees covering the pitch) I think Woolfie has a great passing range as well but just is slower in what he does. I think a lot of the criticism of the current centre back pairing is unfair I think O’Shea is excellent and Greeves giving away the penalty at Preston was an unfortunate incident as I think he had to rush into something which you could debate was a penalty anyway but there were other players in a better position to cover and clear but the communication was poor. Something that is appearing a bit in these early games which although some players are new they need to make sure communication improves significantly. With players going for the same ball and some attacking movement being quite off as players assume the move rather than making sure.
Returning to Woolfie I wish him well if he does go his agent Town former left back Scott Baron also represents Walton and Baggott (and Donacien) he doesn’t strike me as someone who would agitate for a move but Woolf wants to be playing more regularly no doubt and if he does move in it will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Ipswich Town 2-2 Derby County - Match Report

Just one more thing in true Columbo style there is such little movement in the box we often get plenty of people up there but frequently we have four or five players pretty much motionless. It really annoys me and shows how slow our build up is.

We look strong in lots of areas and we seem to limit opposition attacks. I need to watch the game back to work out how Brewster got into so much space before the apparent Leif penalty. I was too far away to see if it was or wasn’t. I really worry though about the speed of the build up and the lack of running in behind. All of our attacks seem to end up on a wing after a significant amount of ponderous passing. I also cannot work out out of possession are we pressing or not it does seem a bit half hearted staring with Hurst who I think was lucky to keep his place after Preston and today offered very little and struggles now to even hold the ball up often losing it with a heavy touch. Everything needs to get up to speed quickly you cannot afford to take too many fixtures to get the game plan working. I thought Azon looks like he could be a real handful and some of Cajustes play was excellent and I love Matusiwas desire. I think the Greeves / O Shea pairing is a good one. I liked what I saw of Kipre at Bromley and I like Wolfenden I just think he is even slower in his build up and he doesn’t need to be as he has a great passing range. I hope McKenna quickens things up we have signed a load of excellent wide players take the brake off and let them loose. I still think this team
Is capable of great football but feeling thoroughly disappointed with today on the back of a long journey last week.

Town Confirm Klug's Departure

A great servant to the club must have been especially difficult when the club simply was not investing. The future of the academy and training facilities look great so hopefully we recruit well in those key behind the scenes development roles & really strengthen with hopefully players coming through into the first team. Bryan was part of the staff who bought a team to Bromley for the FA Youth Cup apart from players families we were the only Ipswich fans there and he let my son sit with the players an experience which he absolutely loved.

Also Delap great going forward offers so much but defensively is problematic would prefer him staying up the pitch to give the opposition something to think about particularly when defending set pieces

I really do think it is a case of incremental changes rather than anything too drastic. On the left I do like Clark but against Everton he was being played as we would with Broadhead not so wide and tucked in to give Leif the space on the outside. I like Clark but I think he needs to be played wider with Davis offering more of an underlap which would also provide a bit more pace centrally. Burns against Everton was not moving wider quickly enough he really needs to open the pitch up when he plays. I don't subscribe to Hutch out on the right due to his limitations with going outside and crossing with his right. I do think he could go out there in the later part of games when the defender is tired or if the central attacking midfielder is prepared to run outside to open the space for a Hutch move inside. As for central midfield I would like to see Taylor play more as he seems to offer more legs going forward as well as quicker passing. Defensively we need to stop clearing the ball inside blindly there is nothing wrong in putting it out for a throw and resetting too many basic errors. In terms of the build up we have become ponderous, keeping possession is fine and I respect the system but there needs to be a trigger to up the pace and movement to give the player on the ball both more space by a opposing defender/midfielder being worried about movement in behind which also offers a more direct attacking option as well especially of the wide midfielders stay wide opening up the pitch. This was always going to be an incredibly difficult season but I remain convinced that the performances will improve. I certainly thought after Villa we almost had it sorted but the last two games have shown that there is a lot of work still to do as well as difficulties with injuries. Sorry for the long post.

Ipswich Town 0-2 Everton - Match Report

Really poor today. Slow building up with all the play in front of a slow Everton defence we need to open up teams with some runs in behind if nothing else gives more space to the player on the ball. Hutchinson is a great player with a technical flaw he struggles to beat a man outside on the right and cross with his right foot everything is a cut back onto the left. I love him but a big issue for a £20 million pound player. Philips and Morsy look a cumbersome pairing.

Bid Lodged For Al-Hamadi, New Offer For Gallagher Turned Down

I watched this player at Bromley where quite frankly he was awful but he has certainly improved whilst at Wimbledon. I trust the manager and the scouting team but would want this to be a supporting signing rather than the main action of the window.

I watched these with my son at the away youth cup game at our local side Bromley. So many good players on the team and these two were particularly good. Also wanted to thank all of the team and staff for letting us behind the dugout and making so much time for my lad who loved the experience. Good luck and hopefully see members of this youth team making their way towards the first XI
