Of course not.

Equally this is not evidence that the Conservative party and government is committed to diversity and equality in the wider world. Unfortunately, for the Conservative party and its ideology, senior BAME Conservatives provide very useful cover.

Don’t be daft.

They are certainly not there fighting for minority rights. And there’s evidence to suggest that they are providing cover for systemic racism and injustice to continue.

You’re right to point out how bad poverty is for so many children — and of course that’s just going to cost them and us more over a lifetime.

But it’s not just now that it’s studiously avoided. I’ve been banging on about it for years while politics has too often been about politicians and parties jockeying for position. I mean we spoke of little else other than the manufactured and utterly avoidable Brexit crisis for 4 or 5 years.

However, I don’t think it’s an inability to focus on more than one thing that’s the reason. It’s a lack of political will. We don’t talk about child poverty IMO because a) not enough people care b) too many people think a helping hand is just a hand out to the “undeserving poor” and c) all the main parties, the media and a lot of the electorate bought into the idea that austerity was the right and only choice after the financial crash.

Covering child poverty, and really proposing doing something about it, would take an admission of culpability and a shift in ideology. Which, as we’ve seen with most Brexiteers, just ain’t going to happen any time soon.

Oh what a surprise.

Why don’t you regroup for the next unevidenced accusation against anti-racists?

I immediately thought no, how on earth could Boris be considered an asset!??

Completely forgetting that we actually made him Prime Minister. 😲

Lots of familiar faces.

Waters definitely has a point. But I clearly remember you saying that the Israel lobby was just doing what lobbies do.

Only with the threat of being called an antisemite if you didn’t agree.

That’s why we get on. Yes, there’s literally nothing appealing about Starmer. Or serious or trustworthy, which is even more important.

Not MK Dons, unfortunately. I’ll have to buy you a beer and have a class war fumble another day. 😀

Sky high inflation rates
at 21:33 17 Jan 2022

It’s a good point. Very little coverage overall.

I’m not a macro-economics person by any stretch although I can grasp things like the UK’s consistently low productivity and guess where that’s heading. But yes, even with my limited understanding, the global rise in inflation and how acute it is in the UK is a bigger worry than a lot of our front page stuff.

Seems to be a pure hit on people’s pockets not even offset by a rise in profits and share value for those lucky enough to benefit.

I did find a very strange line on the BBC explaining it. After talking about a jar of jam that goes up by 5p on the pound they say: “It applies to services too, like having your nails done or getting your car cleaned.” By that logic you could almost beat inflation just by avoiding the luxury of not getting your nails done or your car cleaned. But that really detracts from the real effect which is what happens to the poorest people in an even more squeezed economy.

Don’t worry. Starmer certainly isn’t. They’re just his words — and his words can and will change.

I like you Ftnfers — even though we have very different politics — so here’s my top tip. Put all your weight behind Starmer. I think he’ll be everything you ever dreamed of in a Labour leader.

Haha!

Just think. Someone like Allison Pearson is actually closer to the norm in the UK media rather than some fruit-loop outlier. Incredible!

I’m actually amazed how dishonest and venal that industry is. And I work in advertising, which is often bad enough.

But hey if my job was to sell my own self-interest to the public and package it as their interests, I’d be pretty good at that. Well, as long as I could type while sucking Satan’s c0ck.

Exactly. As you say, unfortunately there are very few Labour inroads here.

I posted it the other day but it’s hugely worrying the power of our billionaire-dominated media. With this party episode, over something that is nowhere near as important as actual policy and lasting damage, they say jump and we do.

Anybody that the media pushes next time needs to be resisted on those grounds alone. Johnson and everyone who ever supported him into power need to apologise — or they have absolutely no validity.

This wasn’t just foreseeable — we’ve been seeing it for years but until now it suited them.

If any proof was needed that Starmer and Labour is no opposition to anything ... you come out in support rather than being your usual Reds under the Bed loon.

I’m in awe of (and mildly entertained by) how much change and progress really scare you. But what’s all that about? Some South East England insecurity unleashed (but really harnessed) by Thatcher in the 80s?

You’re not alone. But as a social democrat, I believe you have an innate worth. Life and your self-worth doesn’t have to be like this. And it shouldn’t twist your politics to such a degree where others get a bad deal so you can feel better.

To be fair, Daisley and the Spectator are worse than most whatever the question.

They’ve been distracting from Johnson’s lies to put him into Number 10 in the first place. They know full well the party/work event stuff will stick. But now they want to seem detached and above it all so we’ll take them seriously when they put their weight behind the next abomination.

Utter scum.

Go on then.

I’m not going to talk about football or anything else. I just want the aggro and the Twitter beefs.

Although, perhaps I could have a regular feature: “Called It!” where I toss a coin and declare whether a brand-new signing or manager is a “Waste of Space” or a “Legend”.
