 | News Comment | Ipswich Town 1-2 AFC Bournemouth - Match Report at 06:26:48
Fine margins. It's all about fine margins at the moment. We deserve to be here, there's no doubt about it. Cam Burgess was immense yesterday. When Morsy slipped, it was Burgess who salvaged that mistake. But only just. It was a fine margin. When Muric made a mistake, it was Burgess again that nearly salvaged that mistake. He did his best, and it was only the fine margins that decided which mistake would result in a goal. And how some fans would react. This bunch of men stand and fall as a team. The give their all and I love them so much for that. Every single one of them, including Muric. We all knew what we'd face in this league. Adversity. And my God, do our boys run towards it. They never stop. And I love them for it. I feel so proud of them after that effort yesterday. Some of the fans ..... Crying in the face of adversity is a motto that comes to mind. Jason Schechterle has taught you nothing at all. Imagine if we'd gone behind in the eighth minute? How would you have reacted then? I know how the team would have reacted. To a man they'd have held their heads high, and fought till the very end. And we could have gone behind. The fact we weren't behind after eight minutes was down to a fine margin. This report details it. "Antoine Semenyo played Milos Kerkez in on the left of the box and the Hungarian international sent a ball across the six-yard box which Marcus Tavernier somehow failed to connect with at the far post." Marcus Tavernier somehow failed to connect. Inexplicable. Except it isn't. As the camera reveals in slow motion, a fantastic piece of goal keeping diverted the ball from where Tavernier expected it to be, and he simply couldn't adjust in time. That clown, that buffoon, that useless, absolutely determined mountain of a man, who never never NEVER gives up, got the merest touch and saved what looked to be a certain goal. Have you read that anywhere? Does it suit the narrative? Fine margins. Lost somewhere in the noise. Set us on course towards what was almost a courageous victory. Somewhere in the noise a previous poster mentioned that he could tell Muric was a bad keeper based on the poster's experience as a Sunday League player. He literally said that. The criticism of McKenna for backing his players isn't always tacit. But it's always Sunday League. McKenna is criticized for subbing players off that were supposedly combining well. McKenna is criticized for taking too long to sub those players off. Sunday League coaches. Throw out enough statements; one might even be true. Even without the caps lock and exclamation marks. This team ......... I can't tell you how much I love this team. And they'll be there next week, running towards adversity, ever single one of them. Not crying. Running. This mountain that is the Premier League ....., they attack it. The perseverance is inspirational. And I love them for it. And I'm smiling. I'm proud of every single one of them. |
 | News Comment | Cajuste and Al-Hamadi Win Caps at 00:38:09
The loss for Australia was actually pretty comprehensive. They erroneously thought they were there for a game of football. When in fact it was the qualifier for the "Roll on the ground clutching various body parts while screaming and banging the ground so hard you hurt your hand and then have to shake your wrist a lot" Championships. Australia were completely owned by Bahrain at this. And then there was a lucky deflected goal near the end too, which made the night even worse. |
 | News Comment | Ashton: Sheeran a Really Special Man at 02:19:40
I love Ed Sheeran for obvious reasons. His music is not exactly to my tastes, but I'll happily listen to it whenever I encounter it. I quite enjoy his acting too, especially the self deprecating version of himself he played in "Yesterday". Maybe a Yesterday sequel could be made. This time after some crazy power grid failure in 2007 a world exists where there is no Marcus Evans. Ipswich Town FC goes bust and falls out of the football league, but through a bizarre set of circumstances the entire share holding falls into the hands of a local sixteen year old busker. As his music career takes off so does his decision making around the club that he loves. Ipswich rise back up through the leagues until a season in League One when Ed wants to become more hands off so he hires Mark Ashton. Ashton suggests that Ed sells his share holding to an American consortium, and there the movie ends. And the whole Marcus Evans era never happened :). |
 | News Comment | McKenna: We're Going to Assess One or Two in the Morning at 02:25:40
I get annoyed by players who don't train hard, fail to make the squad, and then announce in the media that they're making themselves unavailable. Although the sponsorship deal mitigates that somewhat. |
 | News Comment | Scowcroft and Wilnis Inducted Into Hall of Fame at 22:43:16
"while Wilnis, who stayed at Town for 10 seasons and was the first foreign player to be awarded a testimonial...." What other foreign players have been awarded a testimonial? I can't think of any others?! Tommy Smith probably should have been. There's certainly one in our team right now who'll possibly only miss out because he won't complete a decade of service (though I'd be tempted to give him one anyway, if things pan out the way they're looking to). |
 | News Comment | Keane: I Deserved Sack at Town at 00:54:09
Stu-boy, I think the player you're referring to was Rory Fallon, who through a quirky twist of fate sets up a rather unusual Ipswich Town trivia question. What is the connection between former Ipswich Town players Terry Butcher, Mick Mills, Paul Mariner and Tommy Smith? Fallon drew attention due to his excellent performance in a single game, topped off with a bullet header from a corner that won the match one nil. The game was between New Zealand and Bahrain, and it was the final qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Without Fallon that day it's unlikely New Zealand would have made it. As a twist of fate would have it, New Zealand would be eliminated from that world cup after drawing all three group games. Which means that the four former town players in the question above have all been through a world cup without losing a game. Apart from Smith, the other three obviously never lost with England in 1982. And aside from Butcher who was rested against Kuwait, the other three started every game their nations played. I would love to see Tommy Smith on Life's a Pitch sometime. He'd sure have plenty to tell us about the Marcus Evans years, and Roy Keane too for that matter. Came through the academy, former player of the year, and scored against Norwich. He could remind Terry Butcher that he was never rested in a world cup either ;). |
 | News Comment | West Bromwich Albion 2-0 Ipswich Town - Match Report at 08:11:31
I make this comment with the caveat that I haven't seen a definitive replay yet, and could well be wrong. But I thought the incident where Phillips missed from right in front was caused by a brilliant piece of goalkeeping from Hladky. It seemed to me that he dived full length at Wallace's cross, getting the merest of fingertips to it. But this was just enough to divert the flight of the ball ever so slightly so that it arrived a smidge behind where Phillips was anticipating. And with the speed of it, he couldn't react in time. Again, I concede that replays could demonstrate that this was all a figment of my imagination, and I certainly haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else. But I do think the reactions of our keeper are extraordinary. He is a top class operator. |
 | News Comment | Town Make Companies House Filings at 22:33:51
The club seemed to be going to pot under Marcus Evans. Now it's revealed he has 420 shares. A hazy picture is forming through the mist of what may have gone wrong for all those years ...... |
 | News Comment | Town Target Celina Return at 00:55:09
I'd love to see this. An attacking midfielder like Celina is something I think we've been missing. I notice Sapreet Singh is looking for a loan too. Not in the same class as Celina, but very good nonetheless. I love we're looking at players who the fans are excited to watch, as well as the hard workers. |
 | News Comment | Ipswich Town 1-1 Sunderland - Match Report at 01:40:23
That's twice now in two weeks. What the actual? ....... First Holy fecks around with a clearance against Burton and nearly costs us two points. Then Chambers fecks around with a clearance against Sunderland and does cost us two points. Kicking the drinks cart is an understandable reaction the first time. But what are you supposed to do when it happens again a week later? OK Mr Lambert, make it short. Four words short. Gather every single one of the defensive unit together, including any reserves. Fix them with a steady gaze, loaded with enough menace that they understand. "Don't do that again". And then we can put it behind us. I don't want see that again. Not next week, next month, for the rest of the season. Not from professional players who take pride in the level of their abilities and the standards that they perform at. Good work can be so easily undone. Don't do that again. |
 | News Comment | Town and Pompey Linked With Motherwell Midfielder at 00:44:27
So we're looking at the Wellington Phoenix for players now? Get in Sarpreet Singh and Liberato Cacace! Although they'd probably both cost more than we can afford after the U-20 World Cup. Which isn't saying much based on our recent history of paying fees. |
 | News Comment | Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Ipswich Town - Highlights at 23:22:51
Yes, this is definitely a "red card offence" and deserves a week's suspension at the very least. For the referee! Maybe a month doing reserve matches will sort him out. If the lad wants to remain a professional he's going to have to remove this from his game. I'm sure he puts in the hard yards and can himself up and down the pitch at pace, but tackling is a key component of his job. At this point he'd be lucky to be trusted with merely holding a flag. Let's hope his boss isn't one of those types who'll still give him a game next week because he's one of his favourites. |
 | News Comment | Hurst: Proud, Honoured and Very Excited About Challenge Ahead at 12:06:24
What was that Paul Hurst was saying about chess being boring? Where did he get that idea? It can be, if you're trying not to lose. But a good attacking player can certainly rouse the spectators. It pays not to be too reckless though. A bit like football really. Maybe Paul needs to get Nick Pert on the team in an advisory capacity. He knows a thing or two about attacking play ;). |
 | News Comment | Legendary Striker Phillips Dies at 02:19:34
I've often suspected that Ted was the original inspiration for Hamish Balfour who some of you will probably be familiar with. And if that in fact was the case, then you can add being immortalised in the comics to the list of achievements. Farewell and thank you to a man who brought so much pleasure to so many. |
 | News Comment | Smith: We're Quietly Confident We Can Cause Upset at 19:24:39
I get the feeling that Fallon is in the squad more for motivational reasons that anything else. He's been there and done it before, scoring that bullet header that sent New Zealand to their last world cup in 2010. I can't see him getting onto the pitch. In the dressing room though, well, he's been there and done that. Never let his country down, and knows what is required. A very well liked individual with useful experience. Patterson however, has a good chance of getting onto the pitch at some point during these ties. I'm far more interested in watching his performance than thinking about Fallon's. |
 | News Comment | Jewell Struggling for Ways to Explain Defending at 01:42:26
I blame Marcus Evans and his penny pinching ways. Paul Jewel says "We'll have a look at that video tomorrow"?? Open your wallet and spring for a DVD player you miserable sod! |
