 | News Comment | Dutch Book on Mühren and Thijssen Marks 35th Anniversary of UEFA Cup Victory at 17:06:53
The London dominated and Premier League obsessed media still fawns over Ardiles and Villa and mentioned Muhren & Thijssen as an afterthought. Yet, between 1978-1982, Ipswich with Muhren & Thijssen finished 6th, 3rd, 2nd & 2nd in the old Division 1. Tottenham with Ardiles and Villa finished 12th, 14th 10th and 4th. Over those four seasons, Ipswich beat Spurs 6 times, Tottenham won just twice. No contest who had the better two players, and the better team. Yet as a smaller club, history and media will portray it differently. |

I appreciate the calls for a young, hungry manager to be appointed. We'd all love to see someone in a young Alf Ramsey, Bobby Robson or George Burley mould. However, in each of those cases these young managers had the direct ear of the Chairman of the club. Part of their role was to persuade, encourage or lobby their Chairman to secure the services of the players they wanted or needed to build their team. Times have changed, we now have a detached owner (with numerous other interests), who has appointed an intermediary to carry out his day to day responsibilities at the club (CEO). This extra layer acts as a convenient buffer for the Chairman, but equally it may just be the stumbling block in our managers securing their staffing requirements. For that reason, I believe we need a more senior manager, someone in a John Lyall or Joe Royle mould who wont be brow beaten, and has the clout to go to Marcus Evens direct. |
