Interesting. I didnt see so much of him last year. So I'm basing it on what I saw in the PL. I think I even remember speculation about an England call-up (that was probs way off that though).. I'll take your word for his apparent fall-off!! - just had a quick google and it appears hes originally from round that way too so seems to look a good move for all. |

Thats a top signing. Always considered that he would be a decent replacement for Leif when the inevitable happens. I think there is plenty of room for improvement too. Unfortunately, we woukdnt offer him enough football to have him in the building now and Townsend works/ fits the bill. |

I'm glad I'm not going mad. Thanks - supports my initial thoughts its a good signing!! |

He can but if it comes to that, I would anticipate our recruitment hasnt gone to plan, at all. Can see him moving on. Reportedly on a hefty weekly wage given that we got him on a free. For what thats rumoured to be we could get a far better midfield player than what BJ will/ would be. In my opinion, he also doesnt bring 'that' much more to the side at RB/RWB, than what a fit HC will. |

I would be amazed if we carry all 3 in our 25 man squad. My expectation is that BJ will be moved on if we can get a a decent enough fee for him. I'm pretty ure Young has played at LB/ LWB in his career too. Ticks a few boxes for me this signing. |
 | Forum Reply | Matsuiwa- Our new midfied general? at 08:09 14 Jul 2025
I think many (easily done too) overlook the human and career aspects of a footballer. While he's likely earned decent money in his career, his recent trajectory probably masks the reality that he's only been on 'good' wages in the last few years. Therefore, securing his family financially for the future is probably a wise move for him. Considering what he's done for this club, I believe he absolutely deserves that. Whatever he decides, he leaves as a recent legend and I hope whatever path he chooses next works out for him and his family in the long term. P.S - I still hope he stays... |

You maybe right but in my head the conversation went more along the lines of "We're going to give you a BIG contract, so please give us 2 years as a minimum as despite how good you are, the task to keep us up in enormous, if we go down, bring us back up and you will be backed"... or at least thats how it played out in my head. |

Totally agree. It was very difficult to diferentiate between us and the AFC Wimbledon players in that very forgettable night at their place earlier in the season. I expect with Chelsea being blue, it would have been a consideration when choosing not to wear the 'away' shirt yesterday. Another lesson learned this year! |

Maybe so. Phillips did have limited starts before joining but we’re still talking about an England Men’s Player of the Year on big wages, brought in to make a difference which given the fact we signed him, we thought he could. If it was always “unlikely” he’d hit the ground running, then that just points straight back to poor recruitment. The reality is we needed him to step up, especially with no PL quality in midfield. |

Now that it’s all but confirmed we’re heading back to the Champ, I’ve had a bit of time to think it all over, and I’m not devastated. It’s more of an “oh well” kind of feeling. A bit of frustration in places, but I also appreciate the size of the task we were up against. Looking at the squad now, too many of our signings just haven’t worked out. Some arrived with big reputations, PL experience, and big wages and we really needed them to hit the ground running and not just with performances, but by setting standards and showing others what it takes at this level. But they simply haven’t. Muric, Johnson, Phillips, all with PL experience have been really disappointing. O’Shea’s probably the only one with PL experience who can walk away with any real credit. Then there’s the lads we brought up from the Champ. Clarke’s shown glimpses. Szmodics had done okay, though injuries have been a problem. Greaves hasn’t looked fully convincing but again, injury hasn’t helped. And Philogene only came in January, so while it’s hard for him to make a huge impact, it’s also tough and unfair to judge. In my opinion, thats simply too many signings who havent added any real significant improvement or contribution to the team. But if we’re being honest, of all the new arrivals, it’s only really O'Shea, Delap, Omari (kind of new), and Cajuste who’ve had any consistent impact. And even then that’s two U21s and a player managing an injury all season. That’s a huge ask in this brutal and unforgiving league. Which brings me to the recruitment in general. The hit rate just hasn’t been good enough. And as we’ve seen, if you don’t get that right, the task becomes almost impossible. Would we have been any worse off if we’d just kept the spirit and core of last season and added two or three quality signings rather than trying to overhaul the squad? Maybe not. But then again, if we’d started getting battered every week, everyone would’ve said we didn’t do enough or we didnt "have a proper go". It’s one of those damned if you do, damned if you don’t situations. That said, I do think we lost a bit of what made us tick last year by changing too much too quickly. I’ve still had a good time this season. New grounds and some great away days, doing it all with the same group of lads I’ve followed this club with for the last 15–20 years and that’s what it’s really about. I’d have loved to stay up, of course, but the PL isn’t perfect. The awkward kick-off times, the soulless atmospheres at some grounds, and the constant VAR nonsense definitely suck some of the fun out of it. If we learn from this, we’ve got a real chance to come back stronger. We had a go. Came up short. But we’ll have learned loads and now it’s about doing it properly next time.. Wow, what a strange take. I’d love to see his distance covered last night. I imagine it was among the highest on the pitch. His work off the ball, especially in shutting down the left side of forest, was really good. Did he burst past defenders like Omari or Burns would? Absolutely not, but that’s not his game. He put in a shift for the team in a role that, under normal circumstances, we would see Omari, Burns, or Ogbenne before JT. Injuries are now decimating us, and players are being forced into unfavourable positions to fill the gaps. What is his best position? Likely as the most advanced midfielder in a midfield three, or possibly in a midfield two. I still believe he’ll become a real asset for us, though it may not be until next year. Another player who has rode the wave at perhaps the detriment to his personal development. |
 | Forum Reply | Lack of Premier league experienced signings at 08:46 5 Feb 2025
The 'PL' players we brought in haven't lived up to expectations or provided the quality we needed to complement our "Champ all-star team." Johnson, Phillips, and Muric have all fallen well short of what we needed. Ogbenne is difficult to judge since we didn’t see much of him before his injury. However, even before that, did he really strike me as a clear PL player.?- Unsure. O’Shea, has been solid. He’s perhaps the only one who consistently looks like he belongs in the PL. On the flip side, if the worst happens and we go down, how many PL clubs will actually be interested in our players? . |
 | Forum Reply | Crowd last night at 07:42 4 Dec 2024
As bad as I can remember over the last three years. As mentioned, the idea of a midweek atmosphere feels like a bit of a myth to me. The crowd seemed very tense, are people really enjoying being in the best league in the world? There were far more moans and groans last night about passing backwards when a forward pass wasn’t on. It’s strange that, even now, people struggle to appreciate that patience has been such a key part of our build-up over the last three years. It was a really disappointing night, but we keep moving forward. Onto Sunday.. |

This will be a great appointment. Fortunate enough to have played under him when I was a little older and only wish he could have coached me alot earlier! He is a fantastic coach with an infectious positive attitude, and I have no doubt he will be a tremendous asset to the Academy |

I was also at the hospitality at the Etihad with my daughter and some friends. We all managed to stay composed when SS scored, except for my daughter, she gave the game away early! That said, after chatting with a few people around us, it became clear there was a Bolton fan in front, taking his Man City-supporting son to the game, another non Citeh supporting bloke to our left and some Americans on their first trip to the Etihad to support "their" team. Funny old place… |
 | Forum Reply | With both match fit, who is our starting centre forward, Delap or Hirst? at 09:16 19 Sep 2024
If both are fit and equally up to speed, I’d see Hirst playing as the 9. He knows the system well and brings strengths that have enabled us to play our best football previously. However, I can also see Delap playing in any of the three positions behind the 9 as we have already seen how well he picks up the ball on the half-turn and drives us up the pitch. I'm pretty sure I have seen clips of him playing high wide left and right for Hull too, so it wouldnt be completely new for him. |
 | Forum Reply | Phillips at 09:10 16 Sep 2024
Had a tough challenge on Saturday against a very strong player in Belaba, and that task became even harder when Morsy got booked so early! Much like the game against Fulham, he grew into the match as it progressed, and our overall performance improved alongside him. It almost seems like he gains more confidence as the game goes on. Hopefully, he can start showing that same assurance from the beginning and stamp his authority on the game early. I also noticed some really nice link-up play with Davis and Clarke when he came on. I’m feeling very positive about this (ex-Leeds) connection on the left-hand side. |
 | Forum Reply | Cajuste/ Phillips/ Luongo for Saturday? at 11:14 29 Aug 2024
My choice for Saturday would be Cajuste. He seems a couple of weeks ahead of Phillips in terms of readiness. As they say, a good big one always beats a good little one, and Cajuste is quite the specimen. It’s maybe a little tough on Luongo, but he’s still a crucial part of this squad and will likely play his role, most likely coming off the bench. |
