Holiday destination/hotel recommendations
at 15:56 1 May 2025

Zante always works for me, Kalamaki in particular. There's plenty of all-inc hotels and a very pleasant and not very crowded beach if that's your bag. Lots and lots of very reasonably priced tavernas with excellent food and (unlike Laganas 4 miles up the road) no English pubs, nightclubs etc. Clientele is a mixture of British families and Germans mostly. Hire a car, head up into the hills and sample a bit of Greek country living. Go out on a boat trip and see if you can find the Loggerhead Turtles. Zante Town is a lovely little place to walk around, a fascinating mixture of old and new, rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake. And being Greece, if they were any more relaxed, they'd be horizontal.

15 minute transfer from Zante airport. Might be on the borderline for your flight duration but worth it.

As mentioned above though, avoid Laganas.

I never sleep in late and I love the Dawn Chorus at this time of year - yep, even the bloody pigeons.

During the winter when the little blighters have a lie in, I set my clock radio to switch on to 'In The Park' on Magic Classical. Birdsong and laid-back music. Perfect.

Half-time: Town W 2 - 0 Argyle W
at 09:57 25 Mar 2025

Yep, that's correct.

It's between us and Hashtag in the South with us looking like favourites, and Forest and Wolves in the North, with Forest having the advantage at the moment.

The biggest issue in the pyramid at the moment is the disparity between teams in the same division. In the Northern Prem there is one full time club (Forest), one part-time club (Burnley) and one club with 3 part-timers (Wolves). All the rest of Wolves squad are amateur as are all the other teams in the league. This leads to some properly lop-sided matches - Wolves have had 6-0 and 8-0 wins in the NP. I'm sure over time this will settle down but at times teams come to play Wolves with the clear intention of damage limitation.

It's the same in the South, although there have been fewer lop-sided games, save for anyone playing MK Dons who've only earned 1 point all season. They are effectively an Under 17 team after MK pulled their funding and their entire squad and manager left for Real Bedford who are now top of Div 1 SE and look set to replace them. As much as I dislike the whole Real 'Crypto-Bro' thing, they'll be going up at the expense of They-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named Women's FC, so we can let them off this once.

Brilliant isn't it? I was introduced to it by an American friend back when I was living in Wethersfield in 1980somethingorother.

Their version of Tubular Bells from their second album is wonderfully mad (and very very 80s).

ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Sky would do everything in their power to block this as it would hollow out what's left of the TV advertising market and completely kill their business models.

Tourists at Premier League games

Good point, well made.

I regard myself as a Union 'follower' - not a fan. I would love to go to a game at the SadAF. It came about during Covid when Bundesliga was the only football on telly - the lad decided that we should each choose a team. He went for Hertha because a very distant relative of ours used to play for them, so being the dutiful father I am I opted for Union. I've made an effort to understand the clubs history, keep up to date with the squad and other info and watch them whenever they're on Sky. They're a hugely welcoming bunch on Social Media as well, so now I root for them (to use the annoying Yank phrase). Still can't regard myself as a fan though, I'm not from Berlin or the surrounding area and will likely never go there.

Given that the Beeb didn't play "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead", despite it reaching #2 in 2013 after the death of Baroness Thatcher, I'd say that they're being reasonably consistent here. K & The Gang's song about Boris Johnson wasn't played either - although that was a complete swearfest as well as political statement so that's also understandable. I'm not aware of any commercial station that's playing it either although, funnily enough, it's only the BBC that are being picked up about it. Rinse and repeat.

Is it political satire? "The use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues." I've read the lyrics, and I don't think that any of the four uses given in the definition are met - exaggeration perhaps but not in any amusing way. It's a bit of 6th form debating society 'comedy' set to an old tune with a half decent impression of Les Gunn. Must try harder.

Why isnt the first goal on Saturday Chappers goal?
at 12:07 16 Dec 2024

Initial shot on target > first deflection away from goal counts as a block > second deflection back on target therefore OG. And an OG assist for the first deflection as well. Beautiful.

Probably the loudest fans all season
at 12:01 16 Dec 2024

From my position at the top of the Stan Cullis stand, I can confirm we were very very loud. Obviously we went into a bit of a lull after the equaliser, but the ABSOLUTE SCENES at the end were incredible. As much as I enjoyed the whole corporate thing, having to bite my lip and watch you lot go mental was tough.

We're the left side/we're the right side was very enjoyable and came at a point when 27000 Wolves fans were completely silent.

As mentioned elsewhere, the South Bank Roar at Molineux can be quite intimidating, but it just didn't seem as fierce as normal on Saturday.

Reuser......PREMIERSHIP!

It was a superb goal, direct, powerful and a great finish under pressure from a defender and the keeper, but props must go to the commentator who encapsulated a seasons worth of struggles and dreams in two magical words.

Sorry; you said no explanations necessary but it makes the hairs go up on the back of my neck every time I see it.

Wonder whatever happened to the guy with the eyebrow ring that the cameras managed to pick out in an instant.

Hilarious given the history of the people who are promoting this nonsense.

The overall number of signatories makes a good headline for sure, but a simple bit of drilling down on the map tells a different story.

In my own constituency, just 4% of the electorate want a General Election now, and even in Reformy Old Clacton it currently stands at just 7%. I don't really regard that as a mandate to do anything, and I'm sure that outside of the reactionary bubble, no one else does either.

Or, in other words, "you lost, get over it".

The manager of Wolves Women, whose games I also cover, didn't like me reading out the team sheets at all, claiming it gave the away side an advantage.
