Matsuiwa- Our new midfied general?

I got the impression he was more similar in style to Massimo. More progressive passing and close dribbling when going forward.

You think we'd have more points without O'Shea, Cajuste, Delap, Smodz, Phillips, Greaves, Johnson, Clarke?

unfortunately as we've seen the step up is too big, we needed to bring in a full 11. Look what at Sheff Utd last season, Ashton and co went for it and it hasn't worked out. We'd be worse off if we hadn't recruited.

First point of the season

Good post, agree with all of that. Ogbene does appear to be a slight down grade on Wes but a much needed solid replacement in his role. First full prem game though so time to develop in the team.

We've signed some outrageous players this transfer window - not sure this is the right way to look at us trying to fill the final couple of positions and would strongly argue since Ashton has been in, we've had consistently excellent transfer windows.

This would be an odd signing. Not a centre forward and not the style of player I'd expect us to be in for out wide.

Squad then
at 15:32 26 Aug 2024

Think loan for Ali and Fridge out are clear cut. Question is who we keep out of Taylor and Harness.

I'm leaning to keeping Taylor. I think we have enough strength in depth out wide following Clarke coming in (if we sign a back up for Wes, Ogbene in the squad list in the OP) meaning we can let Harness go.

Taylor offers a slightly different, more attacking style of central option to the 4 we have, although not sure any of us really know what Cajuste's style is, reports seemingly suggesting he is more suited to a deeper role than Napoli had him playing. Taylor could do a job out wide if we were threadbare too.

Having said all that, I'm still not fully convinced on Taylor in that CM role based on last season and he would be well back in the pecking order. As has been noted on here, he played further forward at Peterborough and that role doesn't exist for him here. However, I'd argue generally Harness is probably further behind the attacking/wide midfielders than Taylor is for central options.

Chiedozie Ogbene - Luton…

Ultimately he'll be a squad player in the ilk of Harness (would argue he similarly lacks end product at times, improved significantly under McKenna) but players to fill the RW role is something we're lacking. Wes has history of being out for spells with muscle injuries and Johnson isn't good enough going forward for me to fill the role, Delap is playing up top and is a different mould of right sided forward to Wes. Agree main priority is centre forward, but would be a nice to have someone more like for like to fill in.

Really like him as a player, could definitely play a similar role to Wes on the right. Powerful and athletic with work rate to support the fullback, good pace and seems like a humble character. The like for like player to replace Wes is something we are missing at the moment, especially as Delap is playing upfront - feel he could fill this role albeit in a different style to Wes.

Having said that, another centre forward should be a priority. Maybe Wes' injury is worse than first thought or the frequency of these semi long term injuries means we're looking to get some full time cover in for him?

Think they've known he'll be off and been re-investing the expected transfer fee from how active they've been so far.
