Moyes: McKenna's a Great Young Manager Doing a Fantastic Job at a Real Football Club
at 23:28:01

It's all just opinions guys and girls. Yours is no more important than mine and vice versa. For what it's worth, yes KM has found it difficult this season, and yes it's a virtual certainty he's made mistakes over the past 8 months or so, like all of us I expect, including me. Just as I would have expected from one of the youngest managers around with no previous experience of managing in a top league anywhere. Coaching yes, managing no, different kettle of fish.

I will however just add this. Promotion again next season is an absolute must, no excuses not to. We are virtually certain to have a much stronger squad then the one that went up last time. If that doesn't happen and of course it is still KM in charge, then I might just start to join the dissenting voices.

So, a hugely experienced Premier League , very well thought of, recent trophy winning manager with West Ham, thinks KM has done, in the main, a brilliant job. KM's critics on here choose to disagree (it's their right of course, it's opinions). Whose opinions would you prefer to believe? Perhaps we should have one of those pie charts on here, where we could vote and see the outcome!

U18s at Coventry
at 17:56:00

I know actual results aren't the be all and end all of youth team football, bringing on individual players is the most important thing. But take a look at that table, it tells it's own story and it's not a pretty one. We are way behind competing with several U18's sides that are currently at least, from clubs in lower divisions, that can't be acceptable, and it never was years ago.

I'm assuming we are just treading water until Category One begins, I certainly hope so.

Would be an absolute diamond in the Championship if fully fit and able to play twice a week. In a different class to the great majority of Championship midfielders, and that might be one of the biggest problems we have in keeping him.

McKenna: The Reality is We've Been Very Adaptable This Year
at 17:59:02

Labels? I hate them! Whether applied to people or in this case, style of football. I guess it's the only way some people can sort one thing/person out from another in their minds. Bandwagon jumpers are nearly as bad, one pundit says something, another says "I'll have some of that", without even bothering to watch enough matches to pass a proper judgement.

If anyone thinks we've stuck to one style of playing, home and away, all season, they are seriously myopic.

Too Far, Too Soon

Good post tractorboykent, agree with most of it. There is one issue that doesn't get thought through enough in some posts on here. We've all read the comments on us spending 100+ million and not getting much to show for it. Well, that's peanuts compared to what the great majority of Premier League teams have been able to spend over the years they've been in the Premier League, even if they've been yo yoing.

I agree with a comment made by our own Russell Osman on something I watched last night. To be properly competitive in the Premier League this season, we would have probably needed to have spent around three times that, which clearly was a non starter. Well we will now have one parachute payment at least, it needs to be put to very good use along with any more money the owners put up, and money from player sales. Hopefully it will lead to the promised land again and next time we stay there. But be aware, it has taken some teams a couple of promotions and relegations to become finally able to compete at the elite level. The gulf is huge.

Finally I wish the three promoted clubs from the championship this season the best of luck in the Premier League next season. If only for the reason that if only one of them survives it will give a bit more hope to the rest of us that the Premier League isn't becoming the closed shop it appears in danger of becoming.

Newcastle United 3-0 Ipswich Town - Match Report

Agree with most of that budgieplucker, I had us no better than 50/50 on staying up just before the season started.

The road that was chosen in terms of recruitment was to buy players that were deemed to be top level, still young or fairly young Championship players ( with one or two exceptions ) and obviously hope they'd improve enough, quickly enough to keep us up. Sadly it's not been possible for most. It's a policy I agreed with, others may have course hold other opinions, it's a game of opinions.

I believe it does leave us in a very strong position to start with next season. I totally agree with any comments relating to business being done, including all the ins and outs, really quickly. There is just a turnaround of 75 days between the final whistle being blown this season and the first one next season. We can't afford to be scrabbling around at the last minute. I also hope our new data programe is in place and proper scouting now exists outsides the confines of these shores. If what I've heard only today is true, it sounds like it may well be. We will all see. Bring on the Championship, it's going to be the usual dog fight, no doubt!

You haven't missed a thing Steve ITFC. Exactly what I saw too, more than once I might add. Don't worry about MOTD pundits, their opinions (and it's what they are) are no more or less valid than anyone elses.

I worry about the direction the game we love is heading. Soon payers will be taking the field wearing carpet slipers, for fear of making a hard but fair challenge, and we'll do away with onfield referees so that games can be policed by VAR. Another crazy VAR intervention in the Bournemouth/Man Utd match this afternoon, referee got it right first time, yellow card, move on. If VAR officials couldn't see the slip by Evanilson, they need to make an appointment with their optician. I was a fan of VAR at the beginning, policed properly it's a good tool, unfortunately it's being used by people who look for something evil in nearly every challenge or incident, so my enthusiasm has waned somewhat.

blueboy1981, it's rare I make direct comments about officials, but today I chose to make one of few exceptions. That has to have been one of the poorest displays I've seen from one since I started watching football in 1963. The only tinge of sympathy I have for him is, his onfield decision was 100% correct, play on. Then of course those lovely people at VAR, who take any opportunity they can to get in the limelight, chip in with an idiotic intervention. The ref then of course thinks " oh, my lords and paymasters believe I've possibly/probably made an incorrect decision, I will look at the screen and reverse my decision anyway " as few refs have the " cojones " to stick by their original decision.

I will admit I was a big supporter of VAR when it was bought in, unfortunately it's run by people who think they are the main show, not the players. It still can be a tool for good if policed properly. Let the match be refed by referees, and only intervene if you think he's made an horrendous error.

Oh and while I'm on my soapbox, regarding the nonsense that goes on and on before a corner is taken. For gods sake why don't refs just let it all continue without interefering, and if he sees an offence when the kick has been taken, then blow for the offence. Players will very quickly get the message I can assure anyone of that.

To finish, I hope everyone that travelled up to Newcastle, has a safe journey home, as usual you were magnificent.

Well, it was a least a contest until it was completely ruined by a combination of idiotic refereeing and VAR officialdom, who got themselves involved in a nothing incident. The ref made the right call first time, if the Enciso/Murphy incident happens a 100 times, 100 times it is never a penalty. Johnson also should never have been booked for simulation, though it was equally an idiotic thing to do to get himself sent off as O'Shea was covering. God knows how Jacob Greaves is feeling after that, I'll admit he hasn't been my favourite player this season, but the mountain of work he was asked to get through, I would imagine will lead to him spending a few hours in a darkened room lying down!

So it's officially done and dusted, but before I leave, I want to pay tribute to our amazing away fans, who have done the club proud up and down the country this season. They have displayed the true meaning of the word " support ". There are a few here who might do well to look it up in a dictionary. I salute each and every one of you.

We go again in the Chamionship on August 8th. Not much time before this season finally closes and that one starts. We need to have started to prepare for that already, and have all the comings and goings sorted out long before August 8th. I think we will have learned a lot from a chasening experience, and it will stand us in very good stead.

McKenna: Howe Has Built a Top, Top Newcastle Team
at 23:48:34

Whatever the ins and outs, comings and goings, whether it be players, manager etc, it needs to be sorted out extremely quickly after the final whistle blows on this season on May 25th.

The new Championship season starts on August 8th, a short turnaround. We cannot get anywhere close to that date without knowing exactly who's here, who isn't, and anyone that's new needs plenty of time to gel with everyone else. And if by any chance that includes a new manager (personally I hope it doesn't), that needs to be sorted out in days, not weeks. No time to waste this coming pre season!

Whilst we are all entitled to our opinions on players, (and I wonder what theirs would be on some of the posters!), it doesn't have to get nasty and personal. Most of them have been found out this season, but no one has shirked responsibility or lacked effort. We go again in the Championship next season, hopefully the first step on making ourselves more permanent residents of the Premier League. It's unlikely to be a walk in the park, but we will be in a great starting place.

I think the biggest problem in keeping LD, might be his international ambitions. Is Tuchel going to be looking outside the top leagues for players, no matter how well they've done before? He's pretty close now, he might be thinking that's the clincher.

McKenna: It's Becoming More Difficult But It's Not Impossible
at 18:53:27

I look forward to seeing how the 3 promoted clubs do in the Premier League next season. I personally wish them well, if only for the fact that it would see that clubs promoted can indeed survive there these days, and give renewed hope to the rest of us.

Based on the number of Championship matches I've watched this season, I'm not holding my breath, quality hasn't been high, and I've seen Burnley, Leeds, Sheff U etc, all a few times. But I wish them the best of luck.
