Town Takeover Stalls
at 09:56:34

This isn't very surprising they've never really shown that they have the money for the deal. I'm a 100% certain it won't come from a pension fund, they just don't work like that. I could be proved wrong, but it's really implausible.

I doubt Evans is holding out for more cash as the club loses money all the time, so if he is minded to sell and the deal was credible I'm sure he would.

Thank you Europablue for your comments. I find it frustrating that very few Town fans seem to understand the impact of the fair play rules and just assume there's a magic bullet of huge investment down the road.

Effectively new owners could go for the big bang for one season but if it didn't work we'd be stuck for the following seasons and have to shift out any better players or sell other assets. Most other clubs that have done this have sold their grounds, sometimes to dodgy shell companies (Derby), a privilege which fortunately we can't do as we don't own it.

In reality, somewhat depressingly, Evans was not that far off spending towards the fair play limits for several of the recent championship seasons.

Europablue nailed it by saying the recruitment has been the real issue. It was a huge mistake when we sold Waghorn as it immediately signalled that Derby were a bigger, more ambitious club. It wouldn't have mattered if the players we bought to replace him were good enough, but they weren't. Jackson had a 1 in 3 record (once) in league 2, he was already 24 so unlikely to improve significantly and sure enough it translated into 3 goals in 36 in the Championship. What we needed was to spot Ivan Toney or the equivalent. Sure enough they may not be many of them out there, but we don't seem to have been anywhere near the mark for quite a long time.

On the FFP stuff that Grigzee mentioned, I'm not an expert and they will have made some changes due to the impact of COVID-19 , but I believe the current Championship regulations are that you can post a maximum loss of £13million a season with owner investment and max £5mil with no owner investment. In recent history I think clubs like Wolves just massively overspent and gambled on getting promoted and then weren't punished because the premier league is basically a separate entity with different rules. However, if you do massively overspend and fail to get promoted the sh*t would hit the fan. The sad and unpalatable truth is that for significant periods Evans' investment combined with the debt each season was very close to the FPP limits.

One thing that is incredibly implausible about this is the idea that the cash would come from a pension fund. It's not uncommon for US or Canadian funds to make large scale investments in the UK , but not on the basis of a purely speculative investment. There is no circumstance in which we should really want the club to be sold to corporate investors looking for short term gain.

This is actively terrifying. Evans tenure has been a failure, but the idea that we could be sold to the equivalent of sporting venture capitalists with deluded profit aspirations is a real cacker.

The championship is a heavy loss making division that's notoriously hard to get out of. What will someone following this model do if they start losing multi-millions every season? They're not likely to stick it out.

We should never want to see the club sold to someone who doesn't have a long term interest and the means to invest over the many many years.

Evans for all his faults at least provides the admittedly slim chance of rebuilding from a stable base. Better the devil we know until someone with the means and the chops for the long haul comes along.

Peterborough United 2-1 Ipswich Town - Match Report

Well that was a self-fulfilling prophecy. We win a game playing well and of course Lambert goes and changes it. Despite the brief joy of the early goal the first half was one of the worst performances I've seen from a Town side. The fullbacks were terrible. I find watching Chambers almost unbearable. He must hold a special record for banging it up the pitch and immediately conceding possession. I might also have witnessed Ward running briefly towards the end. Oh well. On to the next one.

Ugh! On the one hand we were unlucky to lose, or the other we weren't anywhere near good enough. Both full backs were terrible. Ward plays at walking pace and is always on the half-turn backwards in possession, even when under no pressure. Chambers gets in the game more, but gives the ball away with that default clueless long punt he favours. Other teams whatever their level just don't do that, let alone repeatedly. The system clearly doesn't work and what the heck is going on with the midfield? Downes and Dozzell didn't play about four miles apart in the successful academy side. What is Downes who isn't a creative or attacking midfielder doing so far up the pitch, he should be winning the ball to release to Andre or Bish to get things moving. All wrong. Ugh!

Ipswich Town 2-3 Swindon Town - Match Report
at 21:27:47

Sadly it only took a few minutes before I got that weird sinking feeling today. We lacked any intensity from the start. A large number of the team play at walking pace. When we play out from the back to either fullback they are nearly always either stationery or walking at best. If they're faced by an opponent they're not going to get past them, so they have to turn back and it starts again. They can't play the ball forward infield either because Dozzell is always deep and behind them and in today's line up Huws wasn't mobile enough and Judge was always wandering about. Sadly the players that did run off the ball, like Judge and Drinnan were largely ineffectual, although Judge did do some decent things at points today. If he was played as a genuine number 10 it wouldn't matter if he wanders around, but as part of our 3 in midfield it just leaves us short. Jackson for all his pace didn't seem to run either with the ball or off the ball.

Two goals came from uncontested crosses and the second, though it was an amazing strike, was completely uncontested, a symptom of the lightweight players and the light numbers in midfield.

None of our strikers can play up front alone, although Norwood made a bit of impact when he came on, which is why we've obviously got to play two up front. Dobra did a couple of things in the first half, but without Edwards, Bish and KVY none of the others can actually beat anyone and take the game to the opposition.

It's not just about Lambert, several of the players have peaked, but no-one in the team seems to be hitting their top level with him at the helm and at a minimum he needs to sort out the glaringly obvious issues with the formation.

Decent result, clearer sense of identity than the start of last season. Main problem as against Arsenal U21s was Dozzell and Bish running out of steam early in the second half. and we conceded a lot of possession and impetus. Guess with more minutes they'll be able to keep the intensity up. Thought Lambo made the right subs for once to sort this out. Drinnan promising again.

Sunderland and Oxford Linked With Edwards
at 23:17:48

Totally agree with Heathen66, not sure why so many people seem to have a blind spot when it comes to Edwards. Easily the best player in the first half of the relegation season, despite which he got shuffled around to accommodate Judge and Lankaster and then played through injured for the last third of the season. Wasn't fully fit at the start of this season and then had to play right back. It's ages since we've actually had a decent winger of our own who can run with the ball, beat people and score. His 8 goals are more than the rest of our midfield combined. If we were to have Garbutt Lankester and Edwards KVY on our flanks we'd finally have some pace, goals and talent in the side which have been sorely missing for years. Hope the club do a deal for Garbutt and make this happen.
