Jabber Jackson & Orraman: Thank you for your kind words but, as I'm sure you know, I've just adapted the great man's wonderful words from his What is a Club in any Case? quote. He has inspired me here just as he did when he was our manager. Those were, indeed, the days! |

What is a manager in any case? It's not how much money he spends on players Or what he says or does in front of the cameras. It's what he does at a small club, With a limited number of players & a limited amount of money to spend on new ones. It's how he looks after, nurtures & develops raw, young talent, Who might be a long way from home (say Carlisle) Or from just up the road (say Otley) And turns them into club legends. It's how he can turn that small club into one of the best teams in England and even Europe. It's how he can give a community, a town, a whole county A team to be proud of. It's how he can make a small boy Visiting Portman Road for the very first time in 1973 Gripping his dad's hand Fall in love with his team, Ipswich Town. It's Bobby Robson. |

 | News Comment | McCarthy: No Sympathy With Fans Who Hounded Me Out at 20:50:29
This is all a bit unseemly, today of all days, when we've said our final goodbyes to Kevin Beattie, who was nothing if not charitable in his comments about those trying to do their best for his beloved club. And Mick McCarthy (along with Paul Hurst, Paul Jewell & even the reviled Mr Keane) qualifies for that degree of recognition as a minimum. None of them failed through lack of effort (and I can't help feeling there is something wrong within the fabric of the club. I can't pretend I know what that is but I think the ownership of the club leaves a great deal to be desired). But, to get back to Mick, the media is always going to chase him for a comment because, to be fair, he's always good value; and it's inevitable that he's going to say something at some stage. I would myself. And, to be fair, I think he's trying to acknowledge that it wasn't all bad. It was the same for us, as fans, wasn't it? He worked wonders to save us in that first season & then, on very little money, got us into the play-offs. Looking back, I think we can all probably agree that he was here for a season too long. And yes, sadly, it did get a bit toxic at the end. And this comment has gone on for a sentence or two too long so I'd better stop before a section of my own club's fans start hounding me... 😉 |
 | News Comment | Beattie Book Reprinted at 19:37:33
Pleased to say I'm one of the recipients of the new reprint. Glad to add it to his autobiography & looking forward to reading it. I was lucky enough to be a football-mad kid during Beattie's prime. Those Were indeed the Days ... RIP Kevin |
