1981-02-28 Coventry City v Ipswich Town
at 17:16 2 Mar 2025

I was there for that memorable game, I think it may have been the first time Grey Green ran a coach which went on to be a regular thing. There was a fine rendition, albeit from an open terrace of ‘We Shall Overcome’, only heard this a few times at PR and away but always thought it had great potential to be rousing, but maybe it was deemed to be taking away the deeper meaning, or be disrespectful to, the anthem from the US civil rights movement. I still think Pete Seeger would approve it getting an airing.

Worst ever weather conditions you have watched a game in?
at 19:56 7 Dec 2024

We played Luton in the Symod Cup in the very early 90s at PR in November. So cold I could not feel my feet from before kick off and at 2-1 down after 90 minutes I was saddened by a Gavin Jihnson equaliser to being extra time, which in turn prolonged the evening further with penalties. If I remember correctly all 10 penalties were taken with Ipswich coming out on top 2-1. Even winning a penalty shootout showed our vulnerability to this challenge, we just met someone worse, either way neither team looked bothered! I think David Linighan got the last penalty off the post and then in off the keeper!

Still 10 teams, in two leagues, in the inter firm, but as mentioned not so much in terms of firms these days. Always a good Tuesday night out although the weather this year was a bit of a disaster. I remember playing the Topleys at RHS and on a nice evening it is a stunning setting, and also hosted ‘It’s a knockout’ in the early 2000s.

I am sure a TWTDs team would be most welcome in the league next season if they fancied a ‘Nipper Lawrence’ / ‘Billy Dane’ summer football break for a bit of cricket.

"Only our goalkeeper was sober"
at 18:17 18 Feb 2024

When speaking to a family friend, a total town fan who sadly died a couple of years ago, I was amazed when he told me he attended that infamous game, and despite being a well spoken sort of bloke, shocked me by saying you could tell from the moment they came onto the pitch they were all completely p1ssed. I was giving him a lift at the time to a Boxing Day game which was how we got onto the subject, I was also surprised to hear that games used to be played on Christmas Day a few seasons before that.

Elm Park was next to the fantastic Reading Reading Library! Those were the days a proper cold terrace.

The sign in Portman Road that was changed from ‘guard dogs loose in compound’ to ‘Boro loose in compound’ and stayed that way for years
The punks sitting in the windows of the big squatter house near GRE car park
Chants of ‘Dino’ at the police as they paraded the pitch ( remembered that from the laurel and hardy tune reference )
Overflow kids sitting round the pitch
Churchman’s dodgy wooden terrace
The scouse haircuts and jumpers tucked into jeans
The sudden influx of Kingfisher boys at the bottom of churchmans

Fulham 10 Ipswich 1

A season ticket friend of my fathers went to the game, he sadly died in his 90s at the end of 2021. I picked him up for a game on boxing day a few years back and he talked about the game, I was proud to know someone who went, but a well spoken man surprised me by saying it was obvious that the whole Ipswich team were p1ssed as soon as they came on to the pitch. Very interesting chat about that and other away trips from that period.

Look forward to the 2031 Look East reunion or celebration of that victory or do they only cover and reminisce on Inter defeats.

Highfield Road 1981 4 -0 victory on Steve McCall’s debut ‘We Shall Overcome’ the 60s spiritual and moving anthem was sung with passion albeit from an open terrace. Don’t wish to decry the original meaning of the song sung in the US and its heritage meanings, but a very powerful ballad!! A rousing 29k singing that before a game would get the players taking notice!.
