 | News Comment | Jackson and Nolan Banished to U23s at 12:44:28
For someone who talks about structure and having a plan, there is no discernible pattern to the current manager's method of running the playing staff. Neither Jackson or Nolan are particularly vital cogs in the machine but if they were going to be problems within the squad then why were they not shipped out during the window? Even if valuations were not met, how can they possibly be contributing if banished to the U-23s? Sometimes, addition by subtraction works. |
 | News Comment | Lambert: The Negativity Attached to the Club is Huge at 01:25:47
The lack of leadership from top to bottom of our club is astonishing. The only passion we see is to defend themselves from slights, real or perceived. There is no spark of joy. The play on the pitch is sterile. We failed to make chances against a side barely off the relegation places in Division 1. Nineteen years ago, we were beating Inter Milan. |
 | Blog Comment | Marcus Evans Needs Our Support Not to Be Hounded Out at 12:34:49
Well said. ME only sells the club if he gets something back for it and constantly taking shots at him on social media is not helpful. There are many, many worse people who could own the club (would you rather have a reclusive ME or Mike Ashley?). Football has changed out of all recognition in the past fifteen years and the days of a successful club being locally owned by one individual may have come and gone. Supporters do not need to always agree with how the owner conducts the business of the club and certainly on the back of the playoff season more investment may have helped. The gamble with Hurst, widely welcomed at the time, did not pay off. Now, ME must choose between giving a manager with a track record more cash (on top of what he has already given Hurst) in hopes of staying up or cutting his losses to prepare for League One. I think that further sniping at ME perhaps discourages him from doing what we want him to do (dig deeper). Financially, we are a small club but without ME we might not be a club at all. |

Please, ME, give the man some cash to reinforce his belief that the club can be moved forward! Lambert's comments suggest he would not go on an unrestrained spending spree so give PL some ability to go out and bring in the type of player fitting his profile. Otherwise, he'll be gone. |

At some level, who is picked is not relevant unless they are given adequate funding to replenish the squad. I'd either prefer someone with Club ties or a young manager with a track record of success in the lower leagues along with a promise from Evans that they will be strongly backed with cash. |
 | Blog Comment | What Do We Expect of Our Club? at 23:51:02
A well written blog and raises a very good question. Are we, as a club, THAT close to the Premier League or was last year a flash in the pan? I agree with Harry10--our tactics from last year have been found out, Murphy's form has returned to previous levels, and Mick keeps believing last year's magic will return. Dissatisfaction has been intensified by the bright start this year, raising hopes that last year was not an aberration. When Chaplow scored v Watford with the last kick of the game, I thought it was a sign that we'd better grasp our chance to go up because the Force was with us. For the time being it is not. And with the current lineup in current form, it is hard to see the Force returning. The creativity so excitingly glimpsed in August is, by all accounts, gone. Bart is rooted to the bench. Our two central midfielders are ponderous (play one or the other but not both). The midfielders who could actually beat men with a dribble are not selected. The style seems to be straight out of Charles FC Hughes with high top boots! What do I want from my club? To play attractive football. The game is entertainment and with the wide variety of options available on a Saturday in this day and age, if we cannot consistently win then let us at least play in a manner that is pleasing to the eye. At the moment neither style nor substance is being delivered. Is Mick the right man? If he is serious about wanting another crack at a Premier League job this is his best chance at it. Can't imagine someone already in the League hiring him now. We are only four points out of the playoffs so all is not lost but the recent, utter lack of scoring is troublesome. There is talent in the squad, perhaps not at Derby or Boro levels but certainly enough to beat Bristol City or Huddersfield. I also agree with Harry10 that unless a serious committment comes from above (Where did the Mings money go? Wages for loanees?), we will struggle against better funded clubs currently in the division and those with parachute money who eventually will get it right. We can do better than we are doing but to lay the blame solely at Mick's door is a bit unfair. COYB! |

I did notice that in the roll call of recent managers, R. Keane was missing. Perhaps because his team had no identifiable style? I do not get to see many games on this side of the Pond but agree with the main point that we can play more attractive football especially with players like McGoldrick, Bishop, and Fraser in the squad. Last year was about making sure we were not sucked into yet another desperate flight against relegation and we far exceeded expectations. This year, with expectations higher and a reinforced squad, I think we can alter the approach a bit. There will be times when Route One will work (although Murphy's lack of form is a bit worrying). But, we seem to play better when we have actual wingers in the squad and try to play the ball to feet instead of the sky! To me, Skuse has always had the ability to play the ball, let's use it! Keeping the ball keeps the pressure of the center backs and lessens the chances of the panicked clearances that make Smith look so awkward. But, Mick wants to get back in the Premier League as badly as the rest of us do and hoofball will get us close but not into the top two positions (which must be the goal this year). He'll figure it out. COYB! |

I think there is a balance between bolstering the squad against the inevitable suspensions, muscle pulls, etc, that crop up during the winter and destroying the harmony of what apparently is a very closely knit squad. I am convinced that the disaster of 2001-2002 was adding too many players too quickly and disrupting team spirit. MM and TC are rightly praised for making lemonade out of lemons others thought were dry and part of that is motivation and man management. Would be harder to do if there are more men to manage. A well written and incisive look at where we stand going into 2015. Up the Town! |

Alun Armstrong's header in the 80th minute against Inter in the UEFA Cup, November 2001. A magnificent centre forward's header on a cold night against the aristrocrats from Milan in front of a newly enlarged North Stand. Magic. |
