Here we go
at 22:49 18 Jan 2019

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the Theatre Royal to enjoy an evening listening to Bryan Hamilton, Terry Butcher and Matt Holland with an occasional comment from Big Al in the audience. Then today I had the pleasure of reading that come what may Paul Lambert and his staff will be with us next season.
Since my first match at Portman Road in 1967 I have witnessed some amazing highs and some pretty miserable lows. I have great respect for Mick McCarthy for pulling us out of the mire and keeping us competitive but once he started to treat the fans with disdain the writing was on the wall. That combined with the ordinary results and the boring style of football meant that his departure was inevitable.I was delighted with the idea of employing a young and upcoming manager with a point to prove and with the ability to bring young and hungry and capable players in from the lower leagues to break us out of the rather boring routine into which we had fallen in recent years. But for whatever reason it did not work out and I don't think there were many who thought that a change was not needed and credit Marcus Evans for making it. But credit him more for the choice that he has now made. To say that things were flat when Paul Hurst left would be putting it mildly. But look at us now. The odds are still stacked against us but the atmosphere could not be more positive. And that is solely due to one man and and the effect that he and his staff have had on the whole club by which I mean players, employees and supporters. The word galvanised does not come close. And today we are told that Paul Lambert and his staff will be here next season whatever happens. Much as though I would love it if we managed to upset the overwhelming odds and stay up I will not be devastated if we don't. We are getting our club back and if that process needs to continue in League One then so be it.
The affection that Messrs Hamilton, Butcher and Holland have for the club was plain to see last night and now we seem to have ourselves a manager who completely gets what the club is all about and who has in a very short time created positivity out of what was a depressingly negative situation.
I will forever be grateful to my late grandparents for taking me to my first match at Portman Road in 1967. It is a club which means so much to all of us and while our current league position is far from healthy it is a long while since I felt so positive about our prospects. If we are relegated then we are relegated, if we stay up then we stay up. But whatever happens we support Ipswich Town Football Club and that is all that matters.

Bacon and eggs

Or Hunter and Beattie as they were otherwise known. As so often during his playing career Kevin has had to leave the pitch far too early. For a 61 year old the news that a 64 year old has played his last game is for obvious reasons a reminder that life has a limited span. But when that 64 year old is someone who you were lucky enough to watch representing the club that you love today's news is particularly sad. I count myself as being incredibly fortunate to have witnessed first hand most of the greatest years of our relatively little club's history. The Beattie team was full of wonderful players and the team that followed wasn't too shabby either. Hunter and Beattie may have been the bacon and eggs but the likes of Cooper,Burley, Mills, Talbot, Wark, Geddes, Osborne, Woods and Mariner gave us the full English and then just 3 years later we had our continental breakfast. These were truly wonderful years in which every player played a huge part. I don't really like to say who was our greatest ever player because to me they were all special and to them all the team seemed to come first. But my goodness Kevin Beattie was a truly astounding player and I feel very fortunate that in 1967 my grandparents took me to Portman Road for my first match. Little did I know then that within a few years I was going to witness some of the finest club football imaginable and be given wonderful memories that would last forever. Kevin Beattie played a massive part in creating those memories and I hope that he knew in what esteem and affection he was held. On Tuesday evening let's take the roof off Portman Road in tribute to the life and career of one of the all time Ipswich Town greats who played such a huge part in giving us a club of which to be proud.

All together now
at 12:00 29 Apr 2018

So as we face the final curtain of this troubled season we have our last chance to show potential new managers what a great club we are. We have much to thank MM for but on Sunday we have an opportunity to show how much the club means to us and how grateful we are to BK for the last few weeks during which club and fans have reattached themselves to each other. So let's turn up in numbers on Sunday. Before the game in the Fan Zone we can look back to the memories of 1978. And then the game will give us the chance to look forward to a new era and to show the team and the club and those who might be in the frame to lead us in the future all that is good about the supporters of Ipswich Town Football Club. Let's make it a special day.
