TWTD Questionnaire 2024/25 Q58 How would you rate manager Kieran McKenna's performance during 2024/25?
Kieran McKenna's toughest year in management without a doubt, as illustrated by his very good vote dropping from a record 98.9 per cent last year to this summer's 9.2 per cent.
Context is everything, of course, with the Premier League a huge jump from the Championship let alone League One where the Blues were only just over two years ago.
Given that, the vote from the TWTD readership seems a little harsh. Town may have been a fair way off survival in terms of points but so have the other five most recently promoted sides. Staying up is a tough ask and the Blues had it harder than most having made such a swift climb from the third tier.
Arguably, the go down in a better state than Leicester and Southampton, despite being pipped to 18th place by the Foxes, while Sheffield United, unfortunate to miss out on promotion via the play-offs, have perhaps caused themselves unnecessary disruption by changing their manager. Certainly, the club as a whole seems in a better place than following previous relegations.
Despite Town's return to the Championship, there has been little clamour for a change at the top, more concern that McKenna might be poached by Brentford or another top-flight club should a vacancy emerge.
It's difficult to believe the Blues could have a better manager in charge as they look to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt and it would be little surprise if McKenna's very good vote was back in the 90s again next summer.

All valid comments, but we cannot ignore two things: 1. Tactics - namely the total lack of flexibility/plan B in matches. There is a reason we got better results away this season, as we adopted a more conservative approach and had some joy on the break. At home we were naively (and I use this word deliberately) open, and left ourselves so exposed game after game. Regardless of the players at our disposal we never learned - indeed we got worse as the season progressed 2. Signings - ok KM won’t have had the full say in who we signed, clearly there is a club policy of signing players with future potential, to either develop or sell on, but this was to our detriment last season. The few experienced players we signed (Townsend, Palmer) acquitted themselves well, but our slightly weird constant acquisition of additional wide attackers/no 10s (Ogbene, Clarke, Enciso, Philogene) when what we were crying out for was a decent defensive midfielder just unbalanced our team. Again, we did not improve as the season went on. All in all, yes, on the face of it we have a better squad, and more money than when we started last season. But, as Luton showed, that’s no guarantee of future success. | | | You need to login in order to post your comments |
