[Blog] A(nother) New Dawn
Written by Solly on Tuesday, 22nd Mar 2011 12:55

Paul Jewell is quickly showing himself to be a modern interpretation on a 'proper' Ipswich Town manager. Laid back, well respected and with passing tendencies his first few months at the helm have passed in a traditional Town style; some nice wins, some nice football and some nice headlines. All very nice, all very Ipswich.

The players have got a smile on their face, even those consigned to the bench and the fans have too. The only problems have been the lack of goals and odd abject performance of late, but again, this is pretty standard Ipswich fare. But we've had all this before.

When Evans took the club over in December 2007, the immediate talk was of promotion that year. The January transfer window was busy, building confidence in a potential play off push. We, of course, failed in this quest but that summer was when the furore really stepped up a notch. Project Promotion was in full swing and this was it; a new dawn, a new chapter, a new Ipswich.

Jim failed, a lack of cohesion from his new signings and disappointing football leading to another mediocre season. But hang on, what's this? Roy Keane? The Roy Keane? Sunderland miracle worker Roy Keane? "I'd like to do it in one season" Roy Keane? Well then, promotion is inevitable now.

Roy failed, a lack of cohesion from his new signings and disappointing football leading to another mediocre signing. Sound familiar?

As pleased as I'm sure we all are that Jewell is now in charge and the undeniable fact that the feeling around the club is much brighter, getting carried away again will do none of us any good. The last four years have been characterised by a succession of false dawns, of 'exciting' transfers and change but crucially, defined by mediocrity. Let us be pleasantly surprised, not depressingly disappointed; let's not put the weight of the world on Jewell, on the players he brings in, on the squad.

Let's get behind the team, lets get our season tickets and try and enjoy supporting Ipswich Town again.

Good blog, I agree with you. It is hard not to get over excited when Clegg mentions 'big money signings' and Evans' unwavering desire to get Ipswich back to the 'promised land', but we must keep ourselves grounded this time. As long as we get some decent, entertaining football going and at least look like ending up somewhere in the direction of the play offs next season I will be happy. And surely (touch wood) next year won't be as bleak as the last two...?
