[Blog] Pablo
Written by Solly on Friday, 8th Apr 2011 17:23

Today's news that Pablo will never pull on an Ipswich shirt again was of course expected, but that tiny ray of sunshine deep inside hurt when it was extinguished. To see Pablo pull on the blue of Town just one more time would be such a treat.

Maligned by many but embraced by the majority, Pablo was the the man you could rely on for a spark of magic. He was never as effective as many of his team mates were, but his moments of magic were from a different planet; he was worth the admission price alone.

Being a relatively young fan, I do not remember him too well from his first stint in Town, but a goal every three games (cheers Wikipedia) is a very good return for a man who provided as many assists as he did goals. And whatever he did, he did with class.

Toward the end of his reign, in the 2009/10 season, the odd cameo appearance from the bench was pretty much all he was afforded and at times it was pretty tough to watch. The speed of mind looked to have gone and at times he never got into the game, the ball into his feet which he had been so good at utilising over the years seem to get stuck there and he was crowded out, his distribution failing him.

Ironically though, I would hope the greatest memory of him that Town fans have is that goal. The Coventry goal. If you've got a minute to spare, look at this:

It was moments like that and indeed the odd performance like that which still left the Blue Army in awe of Pablo,we still believed he could do it. That day he did more than just score the goal; he set up chances, he had a shot after turning the same player about three times cleared off the line and then he did that.

I'm sure you've all got your own Pablo memories, but that for me is top of the tree. Thank you Pablo, for making the years of Championship mediocrity that bit more exciting and thank you for the memories. Ole, ole, ole, ole, Pablo, Pablo.

Top blog well done. 3-0 against Portsmouth at home last day of the season when they were already up, Pablo's goal that day was him all over, crafty footwork, skill, composure and then a superb finish. Probably my best memory of him, although I reckon I'll remember an even better one than tomorrow.

This blog and subsequent comment is proof that Pablo's great moments could be counted on one hand. That was his problem, when he was good he was sound, which made it doubly more frustrating when he was poor (most of the time). Magilton brought him back out of desperation and let's face it...his 2nd spell was a disaster

Sorry mate that's nonsense quite frankly, clearly not a disaster, Jim bought him on a free and he still shows now the class he possesses. He would still do a job for us now, consistantly played he produces as shown at palace this season.

Eating a lovely bit of goats cheese as I type... I am an older fan and do recall his first stint. He will always divide opinion, but mine is that he was a very gifted chap, could pick a pass wonderfully at times, if far too seldom. Never really got a decent look in second time around. I recall a wondertful goal he scored at Highfield RD against Cov, a sublime performance off the bench late on at Sheff Wed - worth the entrance money alone. How many Premier League players with huge reputations, bought for large fees with massive wages do you watch on Match Of The Day and say they hit their straps and pull their weight every minute of every game? Very few I think you'll find. Just look at some of the dross we have played up front over the years? I think because Pablo can drift in and out and because he has obvious talent, people perhaps expect(ed) too much from him. For me, he makes David Norris look like a pub player. Norris costing us £2.2m, never really delivering and wanting away for nothing... Pablo should be taken in context, a favourite player of some, not fancied by others - but we have had (got) much worse. Shame he's off for me, as a Pablo coming off the bench, in a decent side, could spark things, particularly with one up top... However, not no never to be no more. Ole.

David Norris a pub player who has never really delivered?
I feel that this Norris-bashing is completely unfounded and unfair. Had it not been for his 10 (7 league) goals we would in no doubt be fighting a delegation battle right now! A good return for a midfielder who has had his injuries plus most were key goals in key games. For those who insist on slating him, here's the motm data from the start of THIS season:

7 Aug 3:00pm Middlesbrough A 1 - 3 60 Norris
10 Aug 7:45pm Exeter City CC1 A 2 - 3 18 Norris
14 Aug 3:00pm Burnley H 1 - 1 34 Norris
21 Aug 3:00pm Crystal Palace A 1 - 2 33 Norris
24 Aug 7:45pm Crewe Alexandra CC2 A 0 - 1 17 Norris

Good, well written blog. Sadly I always felt that his skill but lack of consistency was a luxury we couldn't afford and our patience has run out on poor old Pablo.

The article was a good one, and one about Pablo, not Norris. My fault perhaps. Don't think that Norris will be an Ipswich player next season. I want him to do well, and always have done, but I am a realist and think he's okay / ordinary. I don't like slating any of our players, I am not that kind of fan. His goal return from midfield has been was should have been expected of him, if not more. We don't get enough goals full stop, so maybe 7 league goals is something to get excited about, I don't know.

When your three "best" strikers have 20 goals between them all season then yes I suppose we should get excited, or at least be slightly grateful!!

Fab player on his day, had skill in abundance but could appear lazy at times, great to watch his technique and skill.
Thanks Pablo, good luck in whatever you do next.

Say what you will about Pablo, we've all got a different view. Shame he was farmed out on loan by Keane, who was ultimately desperate for a creative player. But show me one other player who could ever have scored a goal like the one in the clip above. Genius, pure and simple. Good luck Pablo...
