Driving whilst on a mobile 18:23 - Jan 23 with 3029 viewsgtsb1966

Didn't realise that from March 1st the punishment doubles to a £200 fine and six points and then if caught again a ban and up to a grand fine. Anyone else think that using a mobile whilst driving should be treated the same as drink driving. I see so many people doing it now its obvious a fine doesn't work.

I've told mates off before to the point where we've argued vociferously about it. I agree with the harshness of the new punishment levels.

I'd make it 50 hours community service sorted out as punishment as well as a fine

No excuse for it

When I think of the things I did when I was a young driver...

I rarely even go over the speed limit now.

Especially after several pints.

A fine would work if there was any realistic prospect of getting caught. But Police don't prioritise it. I wander if they could use cameras better as enforcement?

I'd also think a mandatory jail sentence if you are shown to be on the phone and cause a death whilst driving. And (this may happen) the police to always check phones for use when there are crashes.

To be fair as far as serious accidents go I'm sure the phones are checked as a matter of course.

A 3 month ban would stop this practise almost overnight, that or these tw@ts that do it would be off our roads

My previous flippancy aside. I remember hitching a lift back in the early 90s with a mate. Got picked up by this dude who proceeded to skin up with both hands while steering his motor down the m4 with his knees. He only stopped to check if we had coppers for parents.

We selflessly smoked most of the thing to keep it away from him.

Glad to hear that. Btw, that the police don't prioritise detection is more a criticism of lack of funding, than of them. They are over stretched and many crimes are barely investigated (such as motorbike theft) these days.

Exactly what I was thinking, the crazy speeds I used to do would see me locked up nowadays.

You grow up eventually don't you.

I tut away at other drivers all the time now, like a right miserable fecker.

You should do the IAM training. Your frequency and variety of tutting will be vastly enhanced.

I'd go further tbh.

Straight out ban on the first offence. 3 year ban if caught again within 12 months following ban plus retaking of test.

Pretty much on a par with drink driving then. I think the issue is lack of enforcement the. If people don't think they will get caught, they will continue to use their phones. And it's calls, texting, music....

Filter down any line of slow moving traffic and you'll see someone on their phone within a minute in my experience.

I'm pretty certain they'll check your phone records in any accident involving serious injury or death.

As you say they don't have the resources for sustained enforcement action. I would think publicity of cases where a phone has been a cause of a serious accident, coupled with occasional blitzes will slowly change opinions.

I saw something like that only the other day while I was driving. I was so shocked I almost split my coffee.

And dropped my bacon sandwich.

Lack of enforcement definitely the issue, no doubt due to lack of police to enforce the law.

I do between 100 and 300 motorway miles everyday, and using a mobile or lane 2/3 hogging is by far the most common thing I see.

I can count on 1 hand the number of police I see on the M4/M5/M6 over the course of a whole month.

Good.

If you were counting on two hands that would constitute dangerous driving.

Genuinely think they could do it from overhead cameras if it was set up properly. As someone else said, a 6 month blitz, a few bans and word would quickly spread...

My mate got 3 points and a fine for stretching (and taking both hands off the handle bars) on his motorbike. He wasn't a happy bunny.

Saw a bloke on the M5 the other reading his newspaper while doing 70mph.
I noticed because he edged into my lane as I was overtaking him (yes, I know)

If he was stretching a hamstring I can see how that would happen.
