TWTD Golfers on 12:23 - Feb 21 by TractorWood | Am a member at Bury as they have an under 30's rate. Starting playing in my mid teens but have really fallen out of love with the game in the last 2/3 years. Very similar to a ST as you have friends there etc. |
I don't think an under 30s rate is very useful for Phil.

If there were photographic evidence, it would probably be something like this. But there isn't.

TWTD Golfers on 12:24 - Feb 21 by blueislander | Funnily enough our club , which certainly has a number of "old fart" type members have just relaxed the dress code for the clubhouse ( not on the course though) Obviously the financial aspect is very important, but one of the biggest drawbacks to attracting young people is the amount of time it takes to have a round of golf. Golf needs to invent some sort of 20/20 type game. |
You're dead right. A game that takes over 4 hours to play, plus travelling time, means it takes 5-6 hours out of a day even if you just have a quick drink afterwards. That's a no-no for most dads with young kids so that's taken out what used to be the core market of young to middle aged men. The trouble with shorter forms is that once you reach a reasonable standard, you don't hit enough shots if playing 9 holes to justify the time either as there's so much walking. Many clubs have dropped their prices hugely, apart from the really high end ones so cost isn't really a problem. Some clubs have been selling off some land to developers to survive or been returned to farmland & plenty more will go the same way.

The Times today reports that the Queen is opening her private course at Balmoral to the public 9 hole course, £50 for 18 holes. Either she is hard up , or Phil is not up to golf any more.

TWTD Golfers on 11:53 - Feb 21 by blueislander | Virtually all golf clubs in the UK are really struggling, and I fear many will go under in the next few years. Ours in Guernsey is desperate for new members. Golf has to re-invent itself to attract young people. |
I agree there was a resurgence a few years ago as a result many new courses sprung up. I find the decent ones are struggling less, it's the newer ones that are closing. Where I play the course is always in reasonable nick also the food is top notch as a result they are still doing well.

TWTD Golfers on 17:39 - Feb 21 with 693 views | StuartBrett8 | I dabbled in golf a few years back, used to launch a ball across the council estate when I lived in Norwich. Also played quite often on the pitch and putt near the UEA, didn't pay we'd nip along after closing time and have a free round before dark ;)
