...must be nailed on for SPOTY this year, Tour de France and the Vuelta in the same year, first time since '78 and only the 3rd person in history.
What an achievement.!

There are a few ahead of him in the all time list, some have also reached that 500 mark in a quicker time as well!

Froome just finished 11th in the bunch sprint to claim the points jersey as well, that's just greedy!

For achievements yes, as far as personalities go that would be J Defoe for making a little boys last few months a lot better than they might have otherwise been.

It's not a personality award...they really need to change it to sports person of the year.

Truly impaired.

It's still 500 on the board, he'll have 600 lined up also

I don't think people will realise quite how good he was until he is retired. He'll be talked up as a legend in years to come.

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

I am not taking anything away from Jimmy getting 500 wickets, I just think that Froome has achieved something that may never be done again. Only 3 have taken both grand tours in the same year, you could argue that Froome's achievement is even greater than the other two as the Tour and Veulta are now closer together in the year.

Should have won it previously IMO, but has to be a good thing when the decision is so difficult. Makes for a good list overall https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Sports_Personality_of_the_Year_Award

He does not exist as far as the British media is concerned!

Well Anthony Joshua is a 4/9 shot to win it so the bookies will have you believe the award is going that way.

Cycling isn't really on the media radar outside of the Olympics. Personally, I find SPOTY an overly self indulgent farce.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Indeed. One should consider this when casting judgment on the achievents in 'performance' based sports.

Conventional wisdom is the enemy of thought.

I do agree with this. I think that if people who reach elite levels in sport go on to use their profile to do good stuff, that's when they should be considered for honours.

I think Andy Murray is a bit embarrassed about being Sir Andy while still on the tennis circuit. He does loads of good stuff for charity and, a few years after retiring, that might be the time for a knighthood.

It was the same with the Ashes winning team of 2005 - a wonderful sporting event had it's reward in winning the Ashes - they didn't all need an MBE or whatever they got.

There is no doubt at all that he is the best swing bowler England have produced in the modern era. The criminally undervalued Hoggard comes closest, in my opinion, as a pure bowler, although Botham was utterly devastating when fit. Simon Jones (produced by Wales, though, obviously) could have been the greatest of them all as he could swing it at the highest pace: the closest we had to Waqar or Wasim.

Jimmy's achievement is about skill, consistency and fitness and is truly remarkable.

And yet I'm really uneasy about him taking the new ball in the Winter and planting a rudderless Kookaburra down onto concrete under bright blue, cloudless skies at 79 miles per hour.
