Phil Whelan represented ITFC. The winner was only about 1.5 sec behind the world record, on grass with football boots and without dedicated sprinting training. Makes you wonder how many sportsman around the world would be able to beat the likes of Usain Bolt if they had chosen that path instead. Until recent years there was no money in athletics and even now unless you are the best you'd make more money playing league 2 football

In the late eighties did we have a player called Michael Cole? Seem to remember him being very quick. But I was a kid then so maybe am remembering wrongly.

Over the past 20-30 years, I'd like to have seen a 50 yard dash between Danny Haynes, Darren Bent & Gus Uhlenbeek.
I have vague recollections of Kiwomya being featured in an article somewhere as the fastest footballer back in the early 1990s, Ian Westlake made a lot of his athleticism - he could be in with a shout.

That's 5 then, Westlake makes it 5.
The clubs should stage this as a half-time race. I'd certainly forgo the half-time ale to watch this... ;-)
According to Sir Bob's biography, Beattie ran in the Powderhall sprint, a professional track event (in the days when athletics was still mostly amateur). He was, apparently, a good bet to win it, but pulled up half way down the course, seeming in pain. It turned out that the cause of his discomfort was that his wedding tackle slipped out of his jockstrap!
Two other players I remember as being fast were Lee Martin, but he couldn't seem to do much else but run in a straight line, and Mark Burchill, but he wasn't really our player.

Danny Haynes was another straight line sprinter. I'm sure the reason we had advertising boards around the pitch was so that he knew when to stop...
Ryan Fraser is the fastest player ive ever seen in a blue shirt.

Finidi was pretty swift for a 54 year old.
That's because Burley never gave him his payslip on Thursday like the rest of the team, had someone move around the ground on matchdays to strategic spots and then wave it where he wanted Finidi to run to...
