Audi problems... 09:05 - Jun 19 with 10792 viewsTIB

Took my S3 in yesterday after 4 months of ownership as every now and then when I shift in manual it makes a clunking noise (S Tronic box). Took a mechanic out to try and show him but explained the issue happened only occasionally...we pull out of the dealership and it does it straight away. I left the car with them all day yesterday and went back last night thinking they'd have an answer...but no.

"Mr TIB we've run all the diagnostic tests on the car and cannot find any faults with it. We recommend you keeping driving the car to develop the problem further at which point we will be in a better position to fix it".

Has anyone ever had such advice from a dealership? Couldn't believe it and said I'd be bringing it back in 2 weeks and would like them to look again which they've agreed but still, I expected a better response to the issue than basically keep driving your faulty car until it's totally f**ked.

Car is under a year old and 7k miles on it. Would be interested to know if anyone else has had issues with the S Tronic box (I'm assuming its a gearbox issue).

Figure an update is due...

My car ended up staying with the dealer for 9 weeks as it stopped in the middle of the road, however Audi ran their standard diagnostic test and continued to deny fault. No courtesy car offered and I had to go to the ombudsman. The ombudsman said it would take 12 weeks for me to hear anything...I've still not heard from them and the reviews online about the service being a total waste of time and no help to consumers stand true.

Eventually I was forced to take the car back so I began recording my journeys and emailing / Tweeting videos of the car faulting pretty much daily until they accepted it was faulty and it turned out that they've only seen a similar issue in one other car in the world apparently and they believed it was to do with the Haldex / mechatronic unit...something I mentioned when I first reported the issue but they refused to acknowledge.

A refund has been given and my agreement settled but talk about stressful. Never again will I be dealing with them, the customer service was bottom of the barrel and the sales guy who took the car back said they planned to fix it and sell it on. I feel for the poor person who ends up in it as the fault I'm sure has caused lasting damage elsewhere in the car.

Now to wait for my Abarth 595 Comp to arrive

Cheers for the feedback. I'm going to get in writing what Audi said yesterday and also all the emails I had regarding this issue just after purchase. I'm then going to explore going to Audi directly to get some advice from them. I fully get its difficult to diagnose an intermittent issue but feel like the fact the technician heard/felt the issue and then they've told me to go away makes no sense, especially as I said they could keep the car in as long as need be and they acknowledged the only way to sort this would be for technicians to drive it around until it did the fault.

There was a guy who obviously had huge problems with Chelmsford Audi as he left his looked-brand-new Audi parked opposite the dealership for months with a sign on it saying something along the lines of "dont buy anything from these bstards". I think he had an agreement to lease the space he was parked in from the builders merchant.
Avoid Audi.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

The recurring theme with complaints about Audi I found is once they have your money you are forgotten. I had mechanics acknowledging the fault, emails, AA reports from breakdowns but still would just not accept it was faulty. Good riddance. Avoid Audi for sure.

Saw this recently too...

"JCT600 at Lincoln"

And there lieth the issue.

Just for balance....I bought my A3 from JCT Lincoln 4 years ago...ive always had great service from them. Had a few minor issues under warranty which got fixed very promptly.

Wouldn't touch an Audi with a bargepole !!. I know of four friends / relatives who have spent thousands on one only to have major engine and ancillary parts fail within a few thousand miles with massive cost implications and absolutely no help from main dealers who try a wriggle out of everything with the never seen this happen before attitude and its not covered under warranty. In two cases a failure of the timing chain tensioner on A5 2.0T's resulted in the complete destruction of the engine at a cost of over £8000, and a lucky escape from death as one of the cars just cut out in the fast lane of the M4 on a Friday night !!. Main dealer said they knew nothing about this problem but strangely BBC Watchdog did as they have covered it several times and there is even an Audi tensioner up-grade which they now fit as a recognised modification. Gearbox failures, complete power steering failures, zenon headlight failures, central locking the list goes on. Overpriced, overrated, common, un-trustworthy ( emissions scandal ). Should have got a Ford !!!

I assume that you have posted this on any reputable Audi/S3 forums out there? Sure as eggs are eggs someone else has experienced the same problem as you, always good to have some kind of idea on what you think the problem may be based on others experiences so that you can relay this to the mechanic next time

Is it really a fault? If the diagnostics can't find it, it almost certainly isn't a fault. Could be a driving issue. A lot of manual Audis stall quite easily which is a glitch in their super-duper pointless turn off engine management system. But is isn't a fault. Another issue is that your audi garage will be a franchise - it is not in their interests to help you. Best solution is to get a proper gear box next time - and suffer a different kind of glitch.

A very sexist comment Burwell...tut tut. It will be my fourth "Fiat" / second Abarth. They've always been a pleasure to deal with and given me no issues. Wished I'd never left in the first place.

Yeah I posted it on an S3 forum...some similar issues but none related to the fact it only happened after start-up / turning left. I passed all this info on to the first mechanic I dealt with...I mentioned the Haldex / Mechatronic issues I'd read about on forums but all this was dismissed by the sales guy. I even managed to get the car to do the fault (as it was so intermittent) with the first mechanic in the vehicle...his response..."that's not right". The diagnostic test showed nothing though which after speaking to private Audi specialists confirmed my understanding that that still didn't mean there wasn't a fault. All it meant was that the dealership could keep claiming there was no issue, dodging the need for the car to be stripped and the fault found...a time consuming job I know.

Just before they finally accepted it was faulty I took the chief mechanic out and it did the fault again and he actually was extremely apologetic that it had got to this and been dragged on for so long. He was quite honest that there is a gulf in difference when it came to customer care between the mechanics and the sales guys.

It's done though...I await the arrival of my "girls" car and can hopefully move on in a trouble free motor.

Unfortunately it,s not only VW group that have problems with these newer style double clutch "automatic" gearboxes. Fords Powershift have caused owners loads of problems and they have only just admitted this. Go on any owners forums or ones like Honest John etc. and there are pages of unhappy owners. It,s all about green issues and fuel economy that have meant the end of the old style torque converter type box that was a far more reliable unit. Best of luck in getting something sorted though.

I think Chris Harris of top gear fame had an Audi s4 estate admittedly with a lot more miles than your car but his gearbox developed a clunking sound shifting manually from first to second gear. In the end a new gearbox was fitted
