As a teenager and the reality of life dawned on you 21:28 - Oct 31 with 7375 views | gtsb | what can you remember affected you for a while. Mine was the fear of a nuclear war. It played on my mind for ages. I started to watch the news regularly when I left school and the cold war was really coming to a fore in the early eighties. It was forever on the news and even Frankie's Two Tribes made it worse. The reason I'm asking is because I was talking to someone who said they wouldn't like to bring a child into the world today. I tried to explain the fears when I was younger and that was 35 years ago. I don't fear the world now it just saddens me but as a teenager our emotions run wild.

No, born in 66. I do know the story though. That would've sent me bonkers I reckon if I had been a teenager then if the early eighties is anything to go by.

Even Only Fools and Horses did an episode about a nuclear bunker. You couldn't get away from it. That was just my time. I'm sure other events before and after my teenage years must've had a profound affect on some people.

I was 17 as the bay of pigs events unfolded and the Yanks and the Soviet Union got very fiesty and nuclear war seemed inevitable but fortunately Kruschev pulled back at the last minute. I joined the CND and it's the only time I have been on a political march. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

They even had the public information items repeated each evening on tv - what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. From what I remember we were supposed to hide under the stairs with tins of pineapple chunks!

Yes, not sure if JFK played a blinder or not but in retrospect it could have been all over then and we would never have won the League. edit-I was not actually a teenager then so my answer should be 60's music. [Post edited 31 Oct 2018 22:39]

As a teenager and the reality of life dawned on you on 22:46 - Oct 31 with 5116 views | jeera | For me, a friend or 2 dying young brought home a few realities I suppose. One mate was killed on his 50cc bike at the age of 16. We'd not long finished school and I hadn't seen him for some weeks, but then bumped into him and his girlfriend in town on the Saturday afternoon, (he was particularly proud to be seen with her - understandably as she was stunning), and a few days later he didn't exist anymore. He always seemed invincible too, big, strong chap who was afraid of nothing. *Apologies if that's not in the vein of what you intended, but it was a real opener for me. My grandad had died, but he was old and although it was sad, old people die don't they.

As a teenager and the reality of life dawned on you on 22:49 - Oct 31 with 5104 views | The_Last_Baron | As a kid of about seven it was the end of the world. Religious people put a leaflet through our door saying 'the end of the world is nigh' with a big photo of the earth on fire. It freaked me out for a long time. I used to stare at the sun and was convinced it was moving closer to the earth. Now as an adult my eyes are a bit sensitive to light which I put down to this. I remember the first time I saw one of those big moons on the horizons. I thought earth's time was up.

You mean the Cuban Missile Crisis? The Bay of Pigs invasion was a different thing. I was only six or seven at the time, so blissfully unaware of what was going on. JFK's assassination (by John Peel and Woody Harrelson's father) was the first world event I can really remember clearly.

As a teenager and the reality of life dawned on you on 00:21 - Nov 1 with 4913 views | IPS_wich | Mine was as a 13-14 year old in the last 80s reading about Nostradamus and the interpretations of his prediction that the world would end or there would be some world changing event in July 1999. It had taken such a deep rooted hold of my psyche as I entered adulthood that I holidayed in Zimbabwe in July 1999 because I thought if it was going to be something like a tsunami or nuclear war then the one place it might not impact would be inland Africa... ...feel just a bit foolish admitting that now as I am not a superstitious person or someone who takes conspiracy theories at all seriously. I think it was just that I read about it at such an impressionable age that it was the one thing that sort of stuck with me.

As a teenager and the reality of life dawned on you on 00:49 - Nov 1 with 4864 views | Rocky | The Cuban missile crisis. We were playing football - about 15 a side - and an older guy [about 15] grabbed the ball and said we would soon be all dead. It was getting dark, almost too dark to see the ball. He scared the shiit out of us.
As a teenager and the reality of life dawned on you on 00:59 - Nov 1 with 4842 views | mos | Not that I was even alive when these events occurred, but still. The Bay of Pigs was essentially a blunder, Cuban exiles, whom were funded by the Americans were sent in to stop Fidel Castro’s Cuban revolution, as in the heat of Capitalism Vs Communism a small socialist nation was seen as a threat by the Americans. The attack failed and Castro decided to align himself with the Soviets, seeking protection. Khrushchev put nuclear missiles onto Cuba, beginning the Cuban Missile Crisis. Though all ended well as the missiles were taken out, due to some nifty work by Robert Kennedy, agreeing to take the US nuclear missiles out of Turkey, only if the Cuban ones would be removed too. Although the public at the time didn’t realise that Robert Kennedy had agreed this deal, making Krushchev appear weak, and JFK superior. Although this wasn’t necessarily reality. Also, this was a fundamental factor as to why Khrushchev lost his job.

Yes it was, I was an apprentice then a bit concerned I might get called up. The place I worked, he reservists came in each day with their kit ready to go. Not nice. The other but better situation was when harold Wilson refused to send Brits to Vietnam that was a concern to all of us under 35
