One player from a Wembley Final 11:58 - Jul 4 with 2637 viewswkj

Ipswich Town has been no strangers to Old Wembley - Some of our greatest players have captivated us beneath the shadows of the towers.

If you could choose only one Town player from a 1st Team Town game played at Wembley to be part of Cook's team this season - who would it be and why? (yes, magically the player would be in their prime)

The Beat would be great but injuries would be a concern so for me either Holland or Mariner....... we need a decent striker so Mariner

Paul Mariner. End of.

100 points, 100 goals in the bank. Sorted.

My default answer to these types of things is Warky, because he is the one I would think would make the most difference to the team.

Marcus Stewart would have a right laugh with 3rd division defences mind….

Paul Mariner for me, a striker of that type who can lead line, occupy defenders and score goals is so key to how any team wants to play

Osman, Parkin and Gates all played for 'Town' at Wembley, just to widen the available players!

Can I choose Bobby Robson for manager? Sorry PC, no disrespect.

Also Whymark and Robin Turner in the same game.

Depends. Does Gary Croft come with a tag?

Mariner for me too, although Beattie was, no probably still is, God.

I’m going for Mariner as well. Defense would benefit from and Beat - but a scorer who can ruffle defenses is a necessity. Get him in the team and we’ll be promoted.

Wark for me. Providing drive and goals from midfield. We’ve been missing that for ages.

Every one of the players listed would improve us to be fair.

If you could have Kevin Beattie, when he was 19/20 years of age, he would be my choice. At that part of his career, he was world class, he was like having an extra player in your team. Now if we could have 3, Beattie, Wark & Mariner without question

You seem to be overlooking both charity shield teams - presumably because Town let in 5 goals on both occasions?

IIRC, the Charity Shield match in 1962 was played at Portman Road,

Magilton for me. The ability to unlock of defences almost at ease is something we have lacked for a number of years now.

John Wark for me but I never saw any of the 78 team in their prime.

From the players I saw in their prime, Marcus Stewart, but I would also argue for the leadership and organisation of Tony Mowbray.

In short, how do you choose one player? Any one of them would make a massive difference to our team in League 1.

My first thought was John Wark.

Having looked through the list properly I then thought Brian Talbot, but realised that once the 80’s arrived he faded fairly quickly (and only 6 England caps too).

John Wark it is for me, and would be in most people's all-time XI (that is another thread…)

Wark

I have shrewd suspicion that Warky would find it hard in a poor side. He relied on other players to provide the subtle skills.

However, any of our great defenders would be dominant at any level.

I overlooked just one Charity Shield -

1. The 1962 tie was not played at Wembley

2. Both - The Charity Shield feels more of a fixture than a tournament. However, if you think that Russel Osman, Tommy Parkin, Eric Gates, Trevor Whymark or Robin Turner absolutely should be your one player - no one on here is going to take your dry ryvita for suggesting it.

Thinking of the modern game, much faster, I would have to choose Stewart. He would rip L1 and Championship apart even today. Will forever be an Ipswich legand.
