Saw on fb the other day, a U.S. bloke on holiday in England who rented a 2021 Vauxhall Corsa (diesel) and was getting an average mileage of over 62 miles to the gallon? That seems amazing but I admit I know nothing about diesel and how it compares to petrol for efficiency.
Wondering generally how efficient UK cars. I have a small Chevy SUV which gets about 25 miles to the gallon for motorway driving. A friend with a big Ford truck gets about 12 miles to the gallon for his mostly driving around town.

I average 60.7mpg on this tank at the moment, driving 14 miles to and from work mostly dual carriageway. Been taking it easy recently. That's with over 200bhp too.

The 17-year-old, rather knackered 1.9l diesel Skoda Octavia I got rid of in December was still able to do 50+ mpg, even heavily laden. The new vehicle (12 years old, petrol Vauxhall Zafira) does 38mpg on a run. |  |

My 1.6 diesel-powered Civic Tourer generally gets about 70mpg as a matter of course.
Managed to wring 90mpg out of it by driving conservatively on a recent run down the A140 from Norwich to Ipswich though.
Apparently, around the time the tourers were launched, Honda managed to take a stock model on a 8,000+ mile tour through all 24 contiguous EU countries, and achieved a fuel economy in excess of 100mpg:

You’re right that when gas prices are low here nobody really cares about performance. But in the last few months (Ukraine a big factor, I’m guessing) prices here have shot up to record levels. Added to that, I don’t think most Americans have any idea how more efficient cars in Europe are. They’ve never had to care previously, but they might need to start caring. | |

I get about 50mpg on average which is pretty evenly split between city driving and motorways.

Around town probably 22-24mpg, 35-40 for motorway if plodding along in cruise control.

My eleven year old Octavia 4x4 diesel is getting over fifty miles to the gallon and that includes a forty five mile jaunt with a kayak on top every week or so. |  |

some of the better vehicles i run with amazing MPG are;-
Peugaot 308SW 2015 1.6D = 70mpg
Audi A1 1.6D 2016 = 75mpg
Skoda Fabia 1.6d (wifes car) 2011 - 70mpg
Golf GT 2004 1.9TDI = 55mpg
Bascially the VAG 1.6 or 1.9 diesels seem to get the best MPG. Also very reliable enginge and cheap enough to buy compared to newer vehicles. |  |

Ford Puma petrol, 43mpg in town, 53mpg on motorway runs.
BMW 420 diesel, 60.7mpg overall, and it is ruddy quick too. I recently did a run from the Mediterranean to Belgium, 11 hours of driving, on around two-thirds of a tank... [Post edited 5 Jul 2022 18:04]

I'm shocked at how good some of these big cars are at mpg.
(mine is a 14 year old Civic 1.8 petrol - if I drive like a nun, my record is 52mpg on a long drive). Normal in the 40s. |  |

Purchased a ‘hot hatch’ just as petrol prices climbed. On a very good day I can get it up to 40mpg, but mostly I rag it and get about 27.

Just changed to a new tariff with cheap overnight electricity. Should now be getting 180 miles for about £2.50!*
